Cinema version Vs DVD Version

i saw the movie in 2002 in a movie theater and once again today on DVD. they end differently. how and why is that so?

It's difficult to say why exactly. My guess is that it's simply to please everyone in the audience. The original ending is closer to the book but I for one prefer the happier ending.

It's a Danish movie. Whether it's in theaters or DVD it's going to be boring.
