The importance of Tomas?

I just wonder the importance of Tomas in the story. Did she had feelings for him? Was Benjamin his son? In the book it says that he is in love with her, but i didn't see that in the film...

[Spoilers, of course]

You should have looked more carefully, Thomas' feelings were very well depicted in the movie. He does a few attempts to aproach Dina but he's rejected every time and he is always left for Dina throughout the movie.

I also think that he is present in the movie to show how wild about sex Dina was. Also, his is the father of Benjamin who sinks the boat creating the movie's controversial ending.

I recently saw a interview with Hans Matheson (Thomas) in which he said that Thomas's love for Dina was dark, innocent and obsessiv...and that is the most interesting type to play :) I think he is quit right about that.

I thought she kind of rejected him on the trust level because he didn't tell her where Gerard Depardieu kept creeping off to? Dina had told him to tell her where ever Depardieu went. You just don't disobey Dina and not suffer some consequences.

Tomas was Dina's boy toy. His importance was to illustrate that a woman can behave as badly as a man and get away with it, which is perhaps one of the primary themes of the film.
