The first pilot's series concept is much better

The unaired pilot was years ahead of its time, a Vampire Diaries-style series with rival groups and secrets that many people are not in on, and conflict between werewolf clans.

At some point, some producer must have said "Let's completely retool this in the image of Twin Peaks." So now there's an investigator who knows nothing and the entire town is onto the secret. Which makes Lou Diamond Philips the only relatable character.

There are a lot of problems. In the retooled, aired series the town looks bigger and more suburban. The werewolves are douchebags who answer to a godfather. The cops are corrupt flunkies. And so on. Seems to be shades of GRR Martin's Skin Trade, but maybe that's coincidental.
