Wasabi is Japanese horseradish, often eaten with (though not limited to) sushi or sashimi. It's an acquired taste, especially if you're not used to spicy or pungent foods. Fresh wasabi is perishable; it loses its kick fairly quickly, so any fresh wasabi not used immediately must be kept frozen.

"Don't be fooled. The green smooth textured clump on the side of your sushi dish is rarely real wasabi. More commonly it is ordinary horseradish with food coloring added.

Real wasabi is one of the rarest and most difficult vegetables in the world to grow. Few geographical areas are suited for growing wasabi."

I had real wasabi during my stay in Shizuoka. There was a waterfall and they harvested it in the water (I think they got it from a root in a plant that grew in the water), and that was the strongest wasabi I've ever had! Even a little pinch of it made me feel like I had razor blades going down my nasal passage, even though I was fairly used to beating my friends at eating that weak wannabe-wasabi in American sushi restaurants and steakhouses.

I wouldn't call it spicy food in the traditional sense because spicy food tends to tingle your tongue, lips, and throat. The pain also tends to last for a long time (even hours). With wasabi, the pain is usually very fast and over in a matter of seconds (or a minute or two with a really good chunk). However, you don't feel it on your tongue; instead, you feel it in your sinus. I think you might be able to simulate the feeling by snorting boiling hot tobasco sauce up your nose if you want to get an idea.

In Jackass a guy tries wasabi mixed with other hot sauces, that is how you react if your not used to it

For what it's worth, French's makes one of their "gourmayo"s which has some pseudo-wasabi in it. It's not bad if you aren't a purist. If you can't find it, you might try the two mixed together.
