I thought he gave Jamie's book of poems back to her father because he realized it would bring him considerable joy in the remaining years of Reverend Sullivan's life. It was an act of kindness, symbolizing how Landon's Jamie-induced transformation matured him into a sensitive and caring individual. The reverend's reaction to receiving the book showed just how much he appreciated Landon's thoughtfulness. I personally do not feel it was Landon's way of "moving on."
