How did Landon get the lead in the play?

Landon was sent to work with the theater department as punishment and to give him new experiences. That sounds reasonable. But why on Earth would he get the lead? He has no experience and unwilling. Especially when there are others who would want the lead. That sort of bugged me for a while.
