Agga is the real heoine.

I disagree with those who see Freya as the feminist heroine of this movie. True, she is the dominant character, and she drives the story. And yes she is a Icelandic version of Scarlett O' Hara and even more so Becky Sharpe of "Vanity Fair". But she is really just an old-fashioned femme fatale, making her way by exploiting men. Nothing wrong with that per se, especially in a patriarchal society where men exploited women for centuries.

Indeed the men in this movie are all scum, with the exception of the gruff old grandfather fishing captain.

Trivia: I found out that the only woman among the old Norse gods like Thor and Odin was "Freya" the goddess of god.

But it seems to me that the true heroine who represents the future is young Agga. We see the story through her eyes, and we watch her evolve from an 11 year old child to a wise young woman of 14. She is, as so often in stories, the child truth-teller, the most honest observer of what is really going on.

But, at the end she rejects the easy route of being a "man-killer" herself. She scorns the handsome- but not too bright- young police officer who is now aware of her budding sexuality. And she turns away to go her own way, protecting her female relatives in the process. In doing so, she represents an advance from mere mutual exploitation betwen the sexes.

Btw, I thought the young girl-woman who played Agga was wonderful. She had never acted before or apparently since.

Since the goddess Freya leads the Valkieries into battle, I think Agga became a Valkierie when she became a woman. The truth Agga saw as a child was not the same truth she saw as a woman. The men had the power of political might and the patriarchy, the women only had the power of their unification and combined abilities. Their reliance needed to be on each other, not on the males who disappointed them.

Loved the seacaptain father, just like in the Norse legend. Supposedly the mother married him because she liked his feet. I noticed that feet were a recurring theme in the movie, perhaps it was a reference to that.

And I agree, her acting was outstanding. Hope to see more of all the cast. This was one of my favorite movies.
