Was the opera that S.H. saw (he named it 'La Magdalena') real / made up?

Was the opera that 'S.Holmes' (Matt Frewer) went to see, real or made-up? It is the opera where he meets the opera singer 'Irene Adler'. 'S.H.' named the opera as "La Magdalena", but did not state the composer.

(A scene from that 'opera' is featured in the film twice: at c. 12mins & again at c. 17mins into the film. The score/libretto/staging certainly sounded/seemed genuine enough: very powerful & authentic to the opera genre.)

I ask as the ONLY opera I know of with that Christian name in the title, is a one-act opera named "Maddalena" by Prokofiev. But that Prokofiev opera was not written till 1911! & was NEVER performed until 1979 (in a studio) & 1981 (in a staged production)! So there is no way that Conan Doyle could have known re the Prokofiev version! LOL! ,-D

As the film is set in London in 1890, the opera in this film - or in the Conan Doyle story ("A Scandal In Bohemia") upon which this film ("A Royal Scandal") is based - must ,-) have been a production that had already been staged by that date. IF, of course, it is meant to be a real opera.

Anybody know anything about this 'opera' that was performed in the film?

All help appreciated!
