*Spoiler!* A different ending would've been...

Well, you know how at the end, when Matt (I think) is looking at Emma in the freezer, then he gets shot in the back of the head? Well, I was expecting after that, for the police guy to open the freezer and let Emma out - like it was Emma who was in on it the whole time! That would've been a better ending, yes?

The old "twist upon a twist" idea... not a bad thought... that would have been interesting!

reply

I thought that as well!

I mean look at it most of the scary things being brought to the house had something to do with Emma and her past.

I could see Matt being shot and then them releasing Emma who then says, "How much money did we make on this one?" Because why keep her alive when the fake cop was on their side, they could have killed her right then. (or several other times before then.)

Now that would be a good ending to what was (until the ending) a good movie.

reply

This ending was the more terrifying one... since now the "rich clients" can also use the camera's in the freezer to watch Emma starve/bleed to death.

reply

ahh Sorry Two-headedBoy but unfortunately I personally do not think that would have been a better ending, in fact I as well as the group of about 12 friends (Horror Fanatics all) LOVED that that POS sorry excuse for a human or woman was left like that, anyone who at a young age could do that sh!t (remember how she said she set up her childhood buddy and made him think she drowned his cat which in turn upset him so much that he pissed himself in front of the school?) with her so-called friend is, no matter what anyone says, a cold, callous and sadistic meat-bag, that was pure evil, she knew it would upset him because she knew it was wrong, and all of her actions while in the house, were such that Rex was right about her being in possession of one wicked ego and just what was with her endless whining about her "issues" and insecurities. The only one I "rooted" for? Rex...and to a lesser extent (cannot feel for suicides) Danny. Charlie was pure skank, Matt was so transparent, how Charlie could not notice his whole attitude change right before he killed her is just laughable. But do not get me wrong, I liked the movie, just not most of the characters. And while your idea could have been a good twist...if done with her...it would have just been a piss-off.

Yeah, it would've been a piss-off, but it would go well in establishing her as more "evil" - especially when tied in with all that other stuff. So, like a SuperBitch sort of thing, only one that no-one could ever like. Maybe?

this ending might have been the original ending. reading the trivia on this movie, it was over 4 hrs long when they screened it the first time so this might have been the ending. i like the ending it ended with though, i like it in horror movies when the "good" guys dont win and you end up feeling a little depressed or shocked that it wasnt a happy-go-lucky ending. i remember finishing this movie and had almost a pit in my stomach because i didnt think it was over, i thought maybe this girl will somehow get out or they will open the door later after she sits in there for a couple of hours and she fights her way through or kills them or what have you but nope, just dead. i think it left it open for a sequel with a whole new group of people, although i think i would have been less inclined to watch it because we would already know it was all *beep* and they were all meant to die.

IMO a good ending would be without the cop. Emma kills the blonde guy. In the morning, a suitcase with a million dollars is in front of the house. THe end.

The tricky thing that creates depth was to make the innocent ones really take part on the game - after finding out that it is not a conventional game - like when Danny kills himself.

I liked when the cynical one finds out about the internet (although all of a sudden he becomes a hacker). Tension could be added up to that: ok, so NOBODY is seeing us, what should we do to get the money now? Should we kill each other? Or what would happen if they make a twist and break all the camres, making the 'eye' half blind? Would they be able to attract the perpetrator and kill it, or would they be more interested in getting the money - even it meant to kill the participants? They could even find out that the real rule of the game was that only one person would get the million.

The psychological terror was weak and bad directed. Only Emma got haunted by her past, no other mindgames. Playing with that could dismantle all character's beliefs and take them to the limits in a well paced slashing horror. Not everything in the last night!
Why would Rex need the money so much? There could be a reason for that. As someone nicely put, the characters were dull and two of them melted into one another, even, with that 90s boyband hair.

Also, very unlikely, is that if they get a gun nobody argues to possess it. Perhaps one should keep the bullets, and another the gun. That would create a sense of partition on the group, something lord-of-the-flies-like.

About the organization, wouldn't it be nice to see them talking about (not showing!) conversations they had with the company 'lawyers' that would, then, sound like a scam they fell into?

There would be no need for a 'spy'. The spy diminished all the movie sense. Waiting 6 months to kill everyone all at once? I would then only pay for the last month of subscription if I were a viewer/client! I mean, if they needed a spy, there was not much of a game, but rather a simple trap where in the last night they were slashed after six months of total boredom.

There were nice elements, but weak characters and a confused plot. I liked watching it, tho.

Anything would have been better than the crap they showed in the movie, lol.

I actually thought it was an interesting movie up until the slasher-fied ending, I mean... I just thought, oh here we go, another dude going around murdering everyone, seen this all before.

It makes me mad knowing the director and the writer/s couldn't think of something different and unique to do with the ending, they had SO many options but decided to blend it with every other crap we sit through that American’s purge out.

It just felt so rushed, and was hideously stunted after that end realization.

I SO wanted it to be Emma that had actually killed the boy's family as part of their "game", and to find she was the one that was in on the whole thing from the beginning.

reply

That sounds like a much better ending than the one we got and would have tied up with all the clues of Emma having a darker side to her - with the whole cat prank and laughing at Danny's gift - while pretending to be an innocent, good girl.

It's one of those days...

Honestly, the ending was creepy, since it turned out that the group had far more to fear within itself than from without. Actually, the ending made me wonder if either the makers of Saw or Hostel saw this film, because that's exactly what the ending reminded me of. That being said, this film never got a U.S. release for whatever the reason when it came out (which was why it's basically obscure, as well as having no big box office names) and it was kind of hard to find for a while. Finally saw it recently, and found it to be a nice, generally creepy little Canadian horror drama. Liked the fact that it was more story and character-based then anything, and that it didn't overly reliant on gruesome gore for the entire flick. Pretty well-made little thriller that deserved more than the total obscurity it got here for a while.
