This is such an extraordinary film. I truly love it, and it is so brilliantly acted. Almost all of its cast was nominated for an Oscar.

reply

The acting, as well as the depiction of Iris Murdoch and all the people in her life were both moving and powerfully strong.

The end truly had me in tears. Was very deeply touched by this movie, and more impressed than ever by both Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench (both whom I've always been big fans of).

Possibly the greatest ensemble piece ever

reply

an excellent movie..Kate Winslet should have given an Oscar.

reply

Not really, I personally think Judi Dench should have won it.

I actually think that the four principle actors Dench/Winslet and Broadbent/Bonneville, and even the supporting actors (Penelope Wilton, the West father and son) do such amazing work in their roles, that they make "IRIS" the best acted drama of the decade so far, and with only one more year to go. In particular I think Kate Winslet is the most outstanding of this altogether brilliant cast. There is a very seductive quality to her performance here, as in "JUDE", only Iris Murdoch is a bit more wild than Sue Bridehead.

reply

I really believe that this should have been the first film to win all four acting oscars.

reply

Agreed. The most realistic love story depicted based on real-life events.

reply

really the four principle actors...Judi Dench/Kate Winslet and Jim Broadbent/Hugh Bonneville...are simply marvelous. Really I agree that it was the best acted film of that particular year (2001) and just a beautiful film. Terribly underrated.

Hugh Bonneville should have been nominated too...and Judi Dench and Kate Winslet both should have won along with Jim Broadbent. Winslet especially. I do think this is her best performance...along with JUDE.

reply

I agree completely. It felt like the actors really became the people they were portraying. Very powerful, and emotionally wrenching.

reply

Fabulous. The characters of John Bayley and Iris Murdoch were brilliantly portrayed. The parallel storylines worked amazingly and you really got the sense that Judy and Kate and Jim and Hugh were working as a team in exposing their characters. They were literally the same people discovery and exploring different nuances of their personality at different times in their lives. Not to mention the work of the costumer and hair and makeup people to make them utterly identical. This amazing film which so easily could have slipped into the cliched, Hallmark Hall of Fame style, sappy, lifeless narrative was fresh and fascinating. The script while not some of the best work of modern cinema was a great achievement and a truly probing and heart wrenching character study. MIRAMAX scores again.

this really is an amazingly acted movie. I love when it comes together like this with really great actors bringing their best to the table. I felt the same way when I watched Notes on A Scandal recently. Just amazing acting from everyone Judi Dench was terrific, Jim Broadbent was so moving and this was one of Kate Winslet's most haunting performances. Subtle but moving. Just great.

reply

Agreed. It was poignant, it was riveting, it completely captivated me from start to finish. One of the best movies I have seen in a long while.

reply

Judi was robbed of an Oscar for this. Tremendous performance.
