Iris's Temper Tantrum

I watched with my brother as it is his favourite movie, I was wondering why she was having a tantrum after Janet's death???

She could not intellectually comprehend it, but she could still sense the emotions of the situation. This is typical of Alzheimer's -- the emotions outlive the intellect. She may have been responding to the general emotions rather than to the death. Or she just remembered something that upset her.

Since advanced Alzheimer's patients can't communicate what they are sensing or remembering, we may never know what causes such outbursts. But they are common.

One of the great beauties of this movie is that it shows the consequences of Alzheimer's unflinchingly without losing track of the humanity of its victim.

I use a wheelchair, something mild compared to this.
I am a college professor, but my sense of terror, at moments of physical vunerabilty which thank God, I hide, can be overwelming.
