The real Iris had a face like a mud fence

It's a little difficult to understand why so many people would want to sleep with her. I guess her "intelligence" must have been the attraction but with her personal behavior, I have to doubt real intelligence was present. The smartest thing she did was to choose such an honorable husband who fulfilled his marriage vows, even when the going got rough.

I don't know why you've put intelligence in quotes like that, she was a fellow of St Anne's College, Oxford, she wrote twenty-six novels, she was a well-respected moral philosopher and the people around her were intelligent enough themselves to understand the reasons for her actions. You make her sound like some sort of tart, that's absolutely NOT what she was. Read some of her books and you might understand

Thank you for your reply to the OP's post....You are so correct!

"with her personal behavior, I have to doubt real intelligence was present"

What makes you come to that conclusion? Besides, I don't see how any behaviour whatsoever has any connection to the intellect or intelligence really. High intelligence doesn't necessary goes together with the best behaviour. I had rather nice looking and intelligent people treat me badly and I'm sure that in history there are also (seemingly) intelligent people doing stupid things.

Funny your headline comments on her face, but the text is a critisism of her behaviour combined with her intelligence. So let me ask you: what exactly is your comment about now: her behaviour? Her looks? Her intelligence?

I was born handicapped, which left me with scars on my face. Would that stop you from liking me, too? I mean, you make the comment on it being difficult to want to sleep with someone like Iris. Given your headline I suppose you mean that she doesn't look nice or nice enough for you to want to sleep with her. But how important are looks really?

Pretoria, I'd guess you have been quite influenced by present day air brushed and extremely manipulated images of beauty in the media. Actually, images of the young Iris I saw show a respectable resemblance to Kate Winslet. Hardly a mud fence. but as another poster points out, what difference would that make? The human race has not been propagated only by beautiful people!

I agree 100% with the post by maveltre-566-900040 My ladyfriend and I just saw "Iris" and, when we got home, we looked up the article on Iris in Wikipedia. This has a photo of the younger Iris Murdoch and we both agree that Kate Winslet in this role looked remarkably like the younger Iris -- and neither of us think that Kate looks like a mud fence (nor Judy Dench, either).

She looked like a beat-up old banger badly in need of a makeover. Not only was she ugly as sin, but she dressed like a tramp (doubtless appearance is not a top concern of philosophers, writers, those who "think great thoughts" ... but I mean come on..). And she looked like she was probably smelly.
