Which short stories were used?

My interpretation was that they only used faint inspiration from any one story, just a few loose ideas spun into something completely different. The justification is that the events in the miniseries inspired H.G. Wells to write the stories in the first place. I've read War of the Worlds, and naturally it's completely different from the "alien" story in this miniseries. However, in the miniseries, Wells says that the event made him decide to write War of the Worlds to warn people that there may be aliens out there who are not friendly.

The series was based on six of Wells's short stories, although these were rather loosely adapted (I have read all of them; all but one are included in the hardback collection of "Complete Short Stories"). See here:
