Salinger influenced films

I have seen igby goes down, but i was wondering if there were other movies similar to it-like with privilaged rich kids and growing up and all that. I think i remember seeing a similar themed movie when i was younger (about four or so years ago) on HBO or showtime or something. Can anyone recommened any like-themed movies?

The Graduate of course is a classic coming of age film, and the protagonist is privileged, although I don't really see how that matters. Chasing Holden was a terrible film made a few years back about a kid looking for the author who changed his life (Salinger) and running away to NYC to have lifechanging experiences. I repeat, it was terrible. Rushmore is similar to this movie in a lot of ways, and I think it's a slightly better film although this movie actually exceeded my expectations by quite a bit.

Taxi Driver is like an adult version of Catcher, but I'm not sure if it was influenced by it

We just had to, actually its more like got to read The Catcher in the Rye in school about a month ago. I loved it. It's the best book I've ever read. But early on in the book I noticed a lot of similarites to French New Wave movies. Not just The 400 Blows because it's a coming of age film. Something about Catcher's style of narration, dialogue and structure was very familiar to me from the New Wave. Breathless, Band of Outsiders and The Man Who Loved Women and some others sort of really reminded me of Catcher. I really think Godard and Truffaut read and liked that book, using its characteristics in their films.

Rushmore.

Dutch. Good one about a clever rich kid off at school who goes through a lot battles with his mother's new boyfriend (played by Ed O'Neil from "Married With Children"). It's funny and entertaining.

The Royal Tenenbaum is obviously very influenced by The whole Glass Family which Sallinger's work converges around.

Also and I'll let you see why for yourself, Magnolia and The Squid and The Whale.

Okay, not exactly a Salinger themed movie.. but in the Good Girl Jake Gyllenhall's (sp?)character is obsessed with Catcher in the Rye, he even calls himself Holden..

'Pearls are for tears'

Try Tadpole - I didn;'t think it was particularly amazing but I know people who disagree with me. But couldn't believe how similar it was to Igby.

reply

less than zero seems like it would fit into the salinger influenced films.....even though i've never read any of his books.....

reply

Why hasn't Catcher in the Rye been made into a movie?

reply

He hasn't allowed any of his stories to be made into films since the release of My Foolish Heart. It was supposed to be the film version of Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut, except for that it was terrible. He hated it and has never allowed any more films since. I wouldn't expect any either. At least until he dies, anyway...

This book is pretty much untouchable. No matter what it could never surpass the book

reply

less than zero was a book by Bret Easton Ellis. I'm actually commited to read all the books by both these authors, Ellis and Salinger, so it's strange that you compared them, even if you never read anything by either of the authors.
I really don't find similarities between these two stories, mostly because I don't see Clay as a truely good person, he attempts to be a few times, and I see Holden and a truely good person trying to be bad aka "cool".

just my own opinion.

whoever said that 'the catcher in the rye should be made into a film - well all i can say is - URGHHHH- omg that would be so awful - its untouchable material - you cant go ruining something like that - also it would be hypercritical - holden hates films (i on the other hand love them but i still dont think that it should be made into a film, ever, ever, ever - i mean whats wrong with reading the book???)

Imaginary Heroes reminds me of Sallinger. Whenever I think of my fav dysfunctional-teenage-boy-who-hates-school-and-drinks-a-lot movies I always think of

Rushmore
Igby Goes Down
Imaginary Heroes
The Squid and the Whale

and for college
The Rules of Attraction

*beep* dog has *beep* papers......

less than zero is actually a bret easton ellis inspired film. he's an amazing writer (his other works that have been adapted to film include American Psycho, The Informers, and Rules of Attraction) and he's got that same sort of writing style in the sense that a majority of his characters (the teenaged ones at least) are self-involved rich kids trying to "break free" through drugs or fcking (or, you know..both).

reply

I don't know if I would consider it "Salinger"-like, but when I used to teach Catcher in the Rye in school I used "Ordinary People" for comparison. - wealthy family, troubled young man, dead brother, etc.

How about "Chapter 27"? Jared leto as Mark david Chapman, assasin of John Lennon obsessed with catcher in the Rye, who calls himself Holden and has a mecca to NYC to do everything that Holden does in the book, except of course shooting John lennon. Prick.
