Rachel's drug addiction?

I'm just confused because it never really goes into what kinda junkie Rachel is... Is it heroin??

reply

bingo. remember the scene where igby helps her get ready to meet DH, and we see her track marks? That ain't a pill popper, pal. Unless she's like JFK and Prince and gets Vitamin B shots every hour, she's definitely into the smack. DH sees it in her junkie face and is disgusted and walks out on her, very brilliant wordless little scene there....

reply

ah, I never understood that scene. Thanks !

reply

DH walks out on her because she dresses up like a proper lady. She wants to clean up so he will make her his legit wife and leave Mimi for her, but he is disgusted with her unless she is his dangerous thing on the side. He has always known he is paying for her heroin addiction.

reply

No. She's wearing long sleeves to cover track marks and looking like a junkie in public. DH may not care if he's paying for it, but he's not willing to be seen in public with a junkie.

Jurk 182 is 100% correct. It is a shame that there are so many people who do not understand that scene - it is one of the best in recent years. All done brillantly without a word spoken. Nothing needs to be said by either of them - they both know.

She most certainly DOES look like a junkie. DH notices it from the minute she walks in and bumps into someone. This is not what he signed up for. He knows it and she knows it. He doesn't think it's worth scolding her and she knows she can't defend herself. Nothing needs to be said in this scene - it's perfect.

Exactly, D.H. sees her unsteady walk, then checks out her pupils. He twice squints as he stares hard at her eyes. I don't think he knew about her addiction before that. When he sees it, he looks deeply saddened.

i don't think so. i actually agree with watchthelawn. i think DH walked out on Rachel because she was obviously trying to be his wife. she was dressed in a Chanel looking suit and wearing pearls - trying to be someone respectable and someone he would leave his real wife for. but DH obviously just wanted her as a bit of fun on the side, nothing serious. so when Rachel walked in dressing like that, he knew exactly where she wanted their relationship to continue, and didn't like it. and when he was squinting at her, she looked back at him so hopeful and desperate, obviously in love with him and that's why i think DH walked out on her. i agree there was some aspect of her being a junkie involved, but her trying to disguise it behind proper lady's attire would only reaffirm in DH's mind that Rachel is simply too desperate for his love and affection that it only disgusted him even more.

Rachel is trying too hard. Not to look like a wife. She has no delusions that DH is shopping for a new wife. She knows the score. She is trying too hard to appear to be as healthy as she was when we first met her in the film. She's been using so much that now she's covered in bruises, has dark circles under her eyes, and an unhealthy pallor. So she tries to distract from all that by dressing fashionably in what she thinks passes for classy and chic. But the change in style only emphasizes the greater change in her.

Watch Rachel as she is walking across the street to come into the restaurant, huddled in her coat, frail and beaten. That's the aura she gives out as she walks toward DH.

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

it think this is right on, but for the 'in love with him' part. in desperate need for him would be best, but a shallow girl like her would misjudge her tugging emotions for the real thing.

the look on her face was no longer haughty and challenging but desperate and needy, not what DH was bargaining for. Nothing worse than a clingy mistress.

So many women think they can marry into money. I have seen it with people i know - the wealthy are a tribe and will not let you in if you are not respectable in any way. She would have had a better chance if she actually DANCED.

Yeah, I think jinglybeads is closest to my take on this great scene. When I saw Rachel getting dressed up with the help of Igby and Russell, I immediately thought, "She's trying to get something from DH." Or even, "THEY're trying to get something from DH." I think it's the friction between her addiction getting worse and her dressing like something she's not that caused DH to silently erupt and walk out. There's all sorts of loaded intimations in this scene that DH could be and probably is responding to. Rachel's dressing like his Hamptons social set, when DH wanted something sexy and "Downtown." He wants an escape, not another wife. Rachel wants something more than usual--whether it's money he wasn't planning to give her, a commitment, or respect for being something other than an artsy downtown lover, I'm not quite clear. And it is clear that Rachel is wearing her wants and her desperation on her sleeve more than usual--or at least, in a different setting. DH probably knows that she has a party lifestyle, but seeing her in the daylight in a fancy restaurant in uptown clothes with her addiction not very under control, it's an ugly contrast for him to witness. Whereas, if he were to see her wasted in her glam dance clothes at a party, he'd just go home with her. I think it's actually the complexity of this scene that makes it work well.

It's a shame that you're one of them.

When DH walks out, it isn't because she's a heroin user. They say it in the commentary. Sorry if you thought that was the reason, but it's because Rachel was trying to look proper and like his wife when she was just supposed to be DH's "something on the side."

reply

Yeah. They said it in the movie even. Russel asks Igby when he first arrives at the apartment "Rachel thinks D.H. is going to leave his wifey and set up home with her. What do you think?" and she says "Shut up Russel". Remember?
