Sookie's Choice

Im still undecided wether Sookie's 'betrayal' made sense for her character. When I think about it, it does play into her contradiction. On one hand, she is kind of bohemian, but on the other hand, defends educational institutions. She also expresses coldness in her tone when speaking bout her parents, and pretty much anything. Yet, there is a passion there. Could this contradiction lead her to seesaw between two opposite brothers?

But somehow, it still bothers me! How could she betray Igby like that and be so unapologetic. And pick such a vile snob! Even when she kinda apologizes it doesnt feel genuine.

And then I think, the fact that it bothers me is the best part, because life is like that. It doesn't always feel good or make perfect sense. This movie has that vibe all along.
And I've gone in circles.
Any thoughts?

I guess I've always seen Sookie's character as less of a relatable person, and more of a vehicle to illustrate the difficult relationship between the two brothers. Through her we see how much Oliver wishes he could sometimes be more cavalier and likable like Igby. The closest he comes is by seducing and co opting Sookie.

You know, this is an autobiographical work of fiction by the writer/direct, Burr Steers. (In other words, it's fiction but with a foundation of truth.) In reality, he has several brothers. But I do wonder if the two main characters don't BOTH represent the same person, showing two sides of his upbringing and the resulting outcome.

It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it. RIP Roger Ebert

I couldn't believe the scene where she just gives in to his brother's cheesy come on! The way she was looking was like she was going to spit in his face(which is what i felt SHOULD have happened) and/or slap the crap out of him. I kind of lost interest in her character when she just gives in and kisses him. I know she was not like Igby and was in the end more like the brother but come on, he was a shallow money chaser making a cheesy move on his brother's "girlfriend," even if they weren't in a deep relationship. I loved this film, and that plot twist was my least favorite part, even though i knew they couldn't be together. Oh well, i can't have it all... :-)

I don't think she really cared. They weren't in a relationship and she wanted to have sex with the other guy. I don't see that not making sense for her character. The weird part was that she actually seemed to perhaps want a relationship with Ollie - but I think she was just not wanting to be with Igby.
