Lars, brother or boyfriend?

And I believe the answer is . . . yes! In the film you hear dad telling Lars to go get his sister and bring her to the party, but in the deleted scenes you see Lexi breaking up with Lars. My guess is when they cut the breakup scene it was easier to change his character to a brother. Fewer complications and questions arise with that choice.
