I watched a version of the film in which there were no subtitles for the French dialogue (actually no subtitles whatsoever). Was this an artistic choice or were there subtitles in the actual American theatre/dvd release?

no subtitles at all. ;)

There was subtitles in the American version, both on DVD and the theater release.

yeah, there was subtitles in it. Just watched the movie yesterday on my dvd again. Sorry, didn't remember there was really subtitles.
