Km/Miles

I've watched this so many times and I cannot believe that I just now noticed this. Meagan says "50 miles as the crow flies" and not "50 Kilometers." Why?

"I aim to misbehave"

reply

Why is it in miles and not kliks?
Because most travelling distances in the UK is measured in miles and all the speed limits are posted in MPH.
We're not France, you know!!

or

Why did you only just notice this?
Because you were so blown away by Kevin McKidd's hunky looks and Spoon's engaging banter that you simply weren't paying attention to the rest of it?

Thank you for explaining. I have never been to the UK so have never travelled. I have just seen weights, etc, which are metric. From what I see you've got half and half. It was a fair and honest question. Now I know.

As for the second part of your explanation, no.

The UK is kinda weird...
We have a mix and it depends on what you're measuring. Engineering measures tend to be metric, but they will still refer to them in imperial. A 150mm pipe, for example, will be a Six-Inch. We have a socket set covering 5-20mm bits, but they will attach to quarter-inch and half-inch ratchets.

By law, weights and measures of anything sold must be in metric. You can have both displayed and many customers still buy in/ask for an imperial measure, but the more prominent price must be metric, to comply with European law.

So while you can still order a pint of beer, it should measure 568.26ml.
However, while a pint glass must be stamped as certified to hold the exact amount, wine is sold as Small (125ml) or Large (175ml) but still hand-poured from the bottle by eye...!!

Distances estimated tend to be in feet and yards, but distances measured are more commonly in metres.

Distance driven is usually in miles but walking (especially hiking) is easier in Kilometers/Kliks, probably thanks to things like Naismith's Rule.

Funny old world, eh!! 

I adore this response. LOL! My head was spinning. You are right, funny old world. I hope when I do get to the UK that I don't make a complete fool of myself. 😳

I think you'll be fine - We're used to visitors anyway! 

That is such a nice thing to say. Thank you!

For God's sake- don't try to buy drugs here, as it gets really confusing:
Quarter ounce for one thing
A gram of something else
then it moves up to ounces, then half Ks.
-I remember once asking a mate about it and he looked at me as though I were deranged & told me to ask a dealer (which I did) & according to those I've asked...it's a bloody silly question, as most of those involved in this type of business are too concerned with not getting arrested!

Miles is what they typically use on mainland UK, a stone's throw is what they use in the Hebrides.
