Any other good werewolf movies?

They seem to be slim pickings.

If you can only watch one werewolf film, I would say An American Werewolf in London is the one to see.

I have never been a big fan of The Howling but it's always up there as a fan favourite.

Obviously there's Dog Soldiers but i guess you know about that - being on the DS board and all. You also have Silver Bullet which is quite good.

Stick with the original Wolfman (1941) with Lou Chaney rather than the Del Toro version.

I quite like the Underworld films but they're not scary (and are arguably more about vampires), so it depends what you're after.

I really didn't like An American Werewolf in Paris but I'm not sure why. Could be the CGI wolves and the fact the first film is in my all time top 5 so it had a lot to live up to.

I can't remember Jack Nicholsons' Wolf (1994) but you do have that as well. Oh, and of course there's THE definitive werewolf: Michael J Fox in TeenWolf :)

These are mostly mainstream ww films but there are others out there. Just stick into Google 'best werewolf films' and you will find a million lists - some of which will have more obscure and less mainsteam films.

Hope this helps you get started - I'd like to see what others have to add

Somewhere in space, this might all be happening right now...

reply

Only other one I can think of is the werewolf scene in Waxwork.

reply

Try Game of Werewolves.

Its a Spanish black comedy........very entertaining!

reply

Cool never heard of that one.

reply

Also try the 2010 version of The Wolfman with Benicio Del Toro and Antony Hopkins.

reply

i liked the look of the wolfman but didn't care for the story. i don't think they should have done what they did with Anthony Hopkins.

reply

Agree to point about Hopkins, but it didn't ruin it for me, I loved the old school look, thought it was a great blending of the classic films but without the cheese of the time. But, it's not for everyone.

reply

I agree...
Spoiler alert!

In the original Wolf Man Talbot sr was a benevolent parent not a competitive werewolf who had been infected, killed his wife, imposed a monthly imprisonment and for random reasons decided to stop doing that!

reply

Lou Chaney rather

Lon Chaney Jr

Even a man,who is pure of heart, and says his prayers by night...

reply

You may also like Ginger Snaps.

The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.

reply

Yeah Ginger Snaps was good. I can't believe that was young Orphan Black in part two lol.

reply

Honestly I would recommend these over AWIL any day:

Wolfman
Wolf
Bad Moon
Silver Bullet
Dog Soldiers
Underworld
The Wolfman
Werewolf TV series (just check out the pilot if you like)
Ginger Snaps - my least favorite but still good enough

You can YouTube the only best part about AWIL, which is the transformation scene and his first night as werewolf. But that's just my opinion, I like werewolf movies with good amount of werewolf in it and good atmosphere.

reply

Great list and I agree re: AWIL - it just wasn't likeable to me. I know this thread is ancient, but I just saw "Wer" and was pretty impressed.

reply

Say the same for any sub genre really. Zombie, Ghost etc..

Anyway here's my list.

An American Werewolf in London
Bad Moon
The Howling
Silver Bullet

Universal's 'The Wolfman' is still a classic and the Hammer re-make wasn't too bad. I also liked the Wolfman in 'The Monster Squad.'

reply

there are. if you get really bored, i'd recommend the first 'Ginger Snaps' movie. all the other ones have been mentioned, already. there's a new one out called 'Wer' that is watchable. but it's more action flick than horror.

Enjoyed Wer also.

Big Bad Wolf was pretty good.

Lobos de Arga, aka Game of Werewolves, aka Attack of the Werewolves
An American Werewolf in London

Not generally a fan of monster movies - i.e. werewolves, zombies, vampires. But Dog Soldiers and the others I mentioned are pretty darn good. If you wanna see a really creepy one, I recommend The Company of Wolves. Fairy tales used to really bug me as a kid and that one is based on Little Red Riding Hood.

reply

I can't believe nobody has mentioned "The Beast must Die".... Excellent movie and cast. The story is great but not the look of the werewolf.

reply

Has anyone here seen Howling V: The Rebirth? I think it's a pretty underrated film with creepy atmosphere and a good mystery INO.

reply

One that hasn't been mentioned is "The Company of Wolves", which is a decent modern retelling of Red Riding Hood.

Another one that is worth watching, but I'm not a huge fan of, is "Brotherhood of the Wolf". It's like a French kung fu werewolf movie. If that sounds appealing, check it out.

reply

Brotherhood of the Wolf is in no way a werewolf film. While the film is about the Beast of GĂ©vaudan, the beast in the film is an armored big cat, or big cat hybrid. The director actually said it was a lion. Saying it's a 'werewolf film' means you probably didn't even really watch the movie. All you're going to do is waste people's time if you tell them to go watch it for the non-existent werewolf. It's fine as it is as a general creature feature though, and worth watching for Dacascos in his martial arts prime.

He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.

reply

OK.

reply

Howl (2015) is pretty good and has some great practical effects, it's about passengers on a train who are attacked by a creature, they must band together in order to survive until morning.

reply

Yup I watched Howl recently. It was pretty good.

reply

Dog Soldiers

The Company of Wolves

all three entries in the Ginger Snaps series, and watch the Director's Cut of the first one, because it gives much more background on the girls' macabre mother

I can't stand An American Werewolf in London, and the problem stems from having cast a nutless wonder like David Naughton as the tital character. The werewolf is the ballsiest of all monsters and in that movie Naughton looked like his scrotum was still tucked up inside his pelvis.

reply

I liked Howl for the most part also. Loved the concept and execution. I would tweek it here and there, but it is good if I am at that place. Too bad they had no budget as especially the 1st werewolf (actual costume from what I could tell) was pretty horrible in appearance. Good entry, though.
