This is severly underrated.

5.5? Are you kidding me? I've seen half of Adam Sandler's Films, and this is my favorite so far.

I agree, it's fantastic. Sandler ROCKS!

reply

I would say that a 5.5 is actually quite generous. This is by far the worst Sandler movie.

reply

Check out Going Overboard :D

reply

How many Adam Sandler movies have you seen? It may not be the best, but for me, it's certainly not the worst. Have you seen Going Overboard? Even I, who like Sandler movies, could not even finish that one, and that was with several attempts.

my god its full of stars

reply

Yup, this was a good movie.

reply

Ya this movie is way underrated, but so are many Sandler films on this site. Happy Gilmore was just an awesome movie that I can watch endlessly and I think it could be a couple points higher than 6.8 as well

reply

i agree this is underrated, it was hilarious.

reply

i love all adam sandler's movies, but i don't think its his best work. i still love it though.

reply

i just watched on tv.is this serious?5.5?movies like avp2 got 6.2 man

peeps who underrated it shld get a life maybe becos its 2002 and now 2007.

i felt the past had better decent movies than now

reply

It was a good movie, but it certainly wasn't amazing. That doesn't matter though. I don't think you'll get much from it if you expect a masterpiece of a film. I enjoyed it for the simple fact that it was Adam Sandler in another of his usual comedies; and an all around nice story as well. People's expectations are too high.

And I never knew Winona Ryder could look so pretty. :P

reply

Not a big Sandler fan (although really enjoyed The Wedding Singer) and normally think a lot of these type comedies are pretty crap (hated Something About Mary and couldn't even finish it). Saying that I though this was hilarious, really worked for me, especially the sneaky uppy butler.

reply

Yeah Winona gets 5 out of the movie's 5.7 stars for me :p

Sandler is another of those movie stars whose films are consistently attacked but persist in being popular. The Three Stooges went 25 years following the same old formula while the film critics consistently looked down their noses at it! Yes, Sandler's movies are not artistic, but they do provide lots of laughs, which is what counts. I've had MISTER DEEDS in my VHS collection for years, and when I saw it again last night I was as entertained as when I watch WATERBOY, WEDDING SINGER, BILLY MADISON and HAPPY GILMORE, all of which I'm proud to say are also in my collection. Stupidity, wackiness, and bizarre behavior will always be hilarious.

reply

I agree, it was a really good movie

reply

I liked it...7/10

reply

It wasn't Sandler's best flick by far, but it definitely is a bit overlooked. I'd say it's worthy of at least a six or seven, but most film-snobs don't dig Adam Sandler, so what can ya do?

Do you know where you are? You're in the corn-rows baby, you're gonna die!

reply

I'm no film snob, but this is the worst movie I've seen from Adam Sandler. It's a kids movie, pure and simple. Kids will love it but I don't.

I like a number of Sandler's other movies, particularly, "The Wedding Singer" and "Big Daddy". Subsequent to "Mr Deeds", he also made what I believe to be his best film to date, namely "Anger Management". I believe however that his brand of humour is now beginning to wear thin and he is right to look to diversifying his appeal with movies like "Reign Over Me". His last effort, "Chuck and Larry" was pretty much formulaic (though the ladies were very easy on the eyes!)

This is one of my favorite Adam Sandler films as well...I'm surprised it has such a low rating.

reply

SNEAKY SNEAKY!!!

Excellent movie, Adam Sandler at his best, Definately underated who rates these movies really? did they not watch the film?

Its All opinionated anyway.

reply

I can't believe Mr. Deeds has a 5.5 rating either. I would give it a 7.

reply

People try to rate movies like this the same way way they would rate other more serious movie, it's a simple, funny, and entertaining film, not a work of art. it doesnt mean its not good. but its no Apocalypse Now, or clockwork orange

This movie is Not underrated, in fact...I think it is overrated. I am under the suspicion that everyone who thinks this movie is underrated is under the age of 21 and is using other Adam Sandler movies as a bench mark. "Wake up people", or... should I say "Grow up people". There is a whole world out there. If you only expose yourself to crap like this, The Water Boy, Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy...you are short-changing yourself. Once you have reached puberty, your skin has cleared up, and...finally, you have gotten laid...look at the list of the best 50 comedies and go watch them. You will understand how utterly childish and stupid this movie is. Adam Sandler is genius only in the fact that he knows that there is a large enough audience of idiots like you who keep paying for this crap and have made him rich.

reply

This movie is meant solely for Adam Sandler fans. The original 1936 film, directed by Frank Capra and starring Gary Cooper, is a far superior film. In fact, this 2002 version of "Mr. Deeds" is perhaps the worst re-make of all time. The original film was funny, charming, and had sincerity and depth. Gary Cooper's Longfellow Deeds took his $20 million and tried to help impoverished, hungry, and (often) homeless people who had been displaced by the Great Depression. There is no such dramatic balance or sense of desperation in this 2002 film. Moreover, Sandler's character comes across as insincere and lacks the charm and warmth that Gary Cooper showed. In the original, Jean Arthur also gave a genuine, multi-dimensional performance as the romantic interest. Wynona Ryder and Sandler had no such romantic chemistry. The 1936 film is a 10. The 2002 Mr. Deeds is a 1 or a 2.

Only problem is, a statement like this encourages an ego in the many teenagers in existence who are into films that are more on the "classic" or critically acclaimed side and pushes them thus into believing that they, because of this fact, must be especially mature and intelligent individuals, as opposed to the more or less lazy and boring typical teenager but with an pseudo-intellectual complex that they're almost always revealed to be.

Young kids are mindless by nature anyway, and so this stuff is tailor made for them.

reply

This movie definitely is not under-rated. I just caught some of it on TV. Completely asinine drivel. Ie: the scene with the cats was one of the most ridiculous piece of crap I've ever seen. Dubbing in people saying "meow" after they catch the cats, and it's supposed to the cat doing it. One cat is on fire for a long time burning to smithereens then it gets thrown into a bucket of water and is suddenly A-okay as signified by the aforementioned person saying "meow".

This movie deserves no more than 3/10. 3/10 is being extremely generous. 5.5/10 is simply ludicrous.

reply

In all likelihood they watched both this and the REAL Mr. Deeds film from 1936, hence the mediocre reception for this sad impostor. I say the rating could stand to be lower given it's one of the absolutely most ill-advised remake ideas in film history.

reply

Totally agree man. This movie had my buddies and me in stitches. It gets a bad rip because of its status as a 'remake.'

I say let's evolve; let the chips fall where they may.

reply

severely underrated?...try overrated.

This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life ever, I tie this with "Going Overboard", "Zombie Nation" any friggin day of the week. everyone knows the best films Sandler has ever done are Billy Madison, Happy Gilmour and if you want to stretch it a little more...Bulletproof. If you like his serious stuff more, then put "Reign Over Me" in there too. But the movie should be scrubbed out as a comedy and put into the documentary shelf, then call it "How Not To Be Funny".
Yes that is a lame joke, but I didn't need $50M to say it or take up 96min of your time.

F%*& THIS MOVIE!....FACE!
