It seemed very unlikely that Sarandon really would have made such a dynamic change, because she played the part of the uptight mom so well.

I can see someone from a past like that working hard to create a life that appears the polar opposite IF they are trying to run from that past, like Lavinia is.
What I find a little unbelieveable is how Suzette stayed so unbelievably the same. She's around 50 and living in what appears to be some studio apartment with hippie crap, candles, and posters all over the place, like a 20-year-old. It's like time stopped when Lavinia left town. Pretty sad.
Both women's mistakes are the whole moral of the story - It's important that you remember and honor your past, but you can't live there.
