Piano Score

I have to admit, what really pulled me into grabbing this movie was the piano score that runs throughout. There are numerous plot holes, and Wood was a terrible fit for his role, his character's demeanor and dialogue, but the film has likable actors, was shot well, and, like I said, has that great piano.

Which brings me to my question: Does anyone have ANY idea where I could find this song available to download? I've been looking everywhere for it, but can't find it.

I couldn't stop thinking about the score from The Conversation. I think Burns wanted to do the same thing with the single pensive piano tune, but the way it was shot didn't use it to it's full potential. Always the same far away high angle shot with obstructions passing as Burns walks. It had a cool look and was well lit and everything, I just wasn't feeling the script.

reply

Exactly. About 10 minutes into this movie it suddenly dawned on me why the score sounded so familiar, it's very, very similar to the piano riff in The Conversation.

Wow, I guess I'm the only one that absolutely hated the score! I honestly thought the movie was hard enough to sit through, but the music was just so painful. :(

just bought this movie on a whim cos it was only 3 pound and had a good cast but really enjoyed it, even if it was predictable!

***potential spoilers ahead***

am glad people have mentioned the piano score, cos i noticed it too. the previous poster said they found the music painful - in a way i think the score was meant to make the viewer feel uncomfortable and bring about a dark sense of foreboding, that francis was already doomed and he was moving slowly towards his pre-destined (by him? by god?) fate.

equally the song 'freebird' by lynard skynard (sic?) which was used in the build up to the final shoot out scene with olver platt for me gave a sense of everything finally coming together the way francis had planned. i could just imagine that song being used in another way at the end of a movie with all the characters cracking open a beer together and smiling knowingly at each other in a didn't we do well fashion. ironically this is exactly what francis is doing as he closes up the bar although the feeling for the viewer is more bittersweet.

well, thats what i thought anyway!

I liked the movie but hated the score. I wouldn't say it's bad music, but it was out of place in most scenes. It didn't fit for me. Aside from that, good movie.

Personally, the film soundtrack/score is something I only ever notice if it is particularly good or bad. The soundtrack for Ash Wednesday was very poor, and it was constantly irritating me throughout the film.

Overall I wasn't that impressed with the film anyway, and would give it 4/10. However the soundtrack, especially the piano, was so awful that I just had to downgrade it to 3/10.

reply

Agree completely. I normally don't notice background music either, but the piano pounding in this movie was like Chinese water torture, only at much too loud a volume. DRIP! dripdrip DRIP! dripdrip DRIP! dripdrip DRIP! dripdrip DRIP! dripdrip DRIP!

reply

I thought it was really good at setting the mood of the film.

reply

Haha that's weird that so many people have varying opinions on the score, because that's usually not something most people (myself included) would notice about the film. Personally, I enjoyed it (the music and the film), but I could easily understand why others wouldn't.

like another poster said, the score set the tone and mood for the film.

trust me on this, i live in tennessee, it gets shoved down our throat all the time(skynrd)... It was Tuesdays gone, ala ash Wednesday... As far as the score goes, very similar to the conversation. For the people knockin the film, try watchin the conversation... u will purchase ash wednesdays dvd when u wake up, because as good as gene hackman can be, it blows... This movie, and the score, were amazing.

I have to disagree about the conversation. It's by no means without flaws but it certainly doesn't "blow". Regardless of minor issues I think it's Coppala's third best film (first two obvious) and a favorite of mine.

Can't help you find the score or a download but if you liked this David Shire score, you might want to see Francis Ford's THE CONVERSATION which also has a fine, find piano score by Shire. Cheers
