The seventh Wednesday before Easter and the first day of Lent. Christians receive a mark of ashes on the forehead as a token of penitence and mortality. Hence, the name of the movie.

The ashes are made from burning the palm fronds distributed on Palm Sunday the previous year.

This is a superstition common among Irish-Americans in which they believe space leprechauns will one day come and destroy earth with their shamrock lasers. They will however spare your life if you have an ash mark. They're a bit fickle like that.
