Did Francis Sullivan sacrifice himself

In the end when Francis goes out, he puts on his brother cloths, why, did he do it intentionally, knowing that he would be shot down? Its obvious that the jacket didn't fit him. He also makes getting dressed a semi-ritual.... anybody have any ideas on this?

I think he did sacrifice himself, because otherwise the killing would go on. Now that he's dead, his brother's safe, since all the big bad gang leaders just wanted was for someone to die.

=\ Sad, though.

i just presumed that they where his clothes and that his brother had borrowed them... but now u say it i gusse yeh, thats probably wat it was about...

Just a wild stab in the dark here but I highly doubt the coroners would have got Ed Burns mixed up with Elijah Wood. Would they?

he did sacrafice himself he tells his brother that he is going to die for him. and he does put on his brothers things. And being who he is he knew that guy was up there waiting, its his neighborhood. As for the coroner thing. why would someone not from the area wait for a obituary report especially after he is the killer

they mention earlier that the killer doesnt know what he looks like. all he knows is to look for the clothes that Burns puts on in the end. Burns knew what he was getting into, so now they wont hunt Wood or Rosario.
also im glad I saw the movie before comingon here, your subject isnt very spoiler friendly.

Very True about the Coroner idea but I think the main idea was that It would take a few days for it to get around the street that it was Francis not Sean that was killed, therefore giving Sean and Grace at least 3-4 days head start. And with Francis dead they would probably not bother going after Sean.

He definitely gave it up for his brother's benefit.
The shooter associated the jacket with Sean because he found Sean's wallet in that jacket when he cased the apartment.
At the very least it bought Sean and his family time to get away.
Francis had gotten to a point where he felt whatever he had going for him had slipped away... the return to killing and the pressure of the lifestyle, the loss of the woman he loved, no longer had the church to help resolve his issues, etc etc etc.

He felt he had nothing left to live for anyway.

Agreed on all points, Latigo. But the question remains how Francis would have known there was still someone out there looking to pop his brother.

After all, they had just taken care of Moran and his henchman.

My first thought was that Francis was looking to put himself in his brothers place. But Francis Sullivan is a smart guy and he knows anyone left looking to kill his brother wants to specifically kill his brother and not him. So anyone mistakingly killing him for his brother might continue looking for his brother.

I think a few important things to remember are: 1) He mentions to his brother while they're in the car in Brooklyn that he tenses up everytime he walks around the neighborhood waiting for someone to put a bullet in the back of his head for what he may have done to a relative of that person.

and 2) He had a relationship with his brother's wife. He doesn't show it but you gotta believe he is going to be a little heartsick over her. Plus, he has to figure that she still has feelings for him and may decide to dump out on his brother and come back for him. So if he's dead she can't.

Any way to an extent I think he decided it was a good way to end it all for himself, his brother and Rosario Dawson's character. By doing this he expedited getting that bullet in the head figuring anyone out there might still be looking to do his brother would do it soon.

And YES, Elijah Wood was about as bad a choice for the role as you could get. I can only assume Ed burns wanted someone who looked very naive and young. But no way in heck is that kid scoring Rosario Dawson.
