Where was the wife?

First off, my wife and I actually really liked the movie. Anway, for whatever that's worth, we just had one main question: why didn't Charlize Theron attend the banquet to honor her husband? It seemed like such a huge event that should've included his entire family.

Because of the sickly kid?
Because he's been honored lots of times and it's no big deal?
Because Joe specifically staked them out and knew she wasn't going?
Because then she wouldn't have been home for the kidnapping plot to work as planned, and there would be no story?
Better question: what was Dad thinking to wreck the pickup with the kid in it?

i'm a screenwriter and i see things different. the only thing i ask myself when i see a movie is : "WERE THE CHARACTERS MOTIVATED TO ACT THE WAY THEY DO?" i did like that mandoki kept the camera dinamic, he had multiple locations (in some movies about hostages the action takes place in one locked place and the cops are outside begging the baddie to eliberate the hostage) and most of all he kept the caracters motivated and i never thought "i don't belive he/she said that or did that".

So you say you're a screenwriter, huh? Interesting...

To b1gb1dness, about why did the dad wreck the pickup, he didn't mean to wreck it, his plane went out of control when it hit the ground, so it smashed into the pickup and all of those other cars.
