Why can't people in these movies do what the kidnappers want?

They always do the same thing in these movies, resist, find ways to thwart them, fight, struggle and make things tough for them when they're gambling with their loved one's life.

If they would just shut up, and do what they're told they will get their loved one back.

Obviously if they just did what the kidnappers wanted there would be no movie, but I agree with your sentiment. In this case they did have a reason for resisting since Hickey was going to kidnap or kill the kid, but I think it was presented too late and not very well. Charlize Theron had done too many things that were foolish risks before she was given an obvious and strong motive to risk her child's life.

I know, right? But if they do that then there will be NO SUSPENSE.

Drama films (or true stories) will be like what you just explained.

We all live in suspense from day to day; you are the hero of your own story.

I know, right? Every time Kevin Bacon smacked Charlize around, I got some satisfaction. All of her histrionics just ticked me off rather than emphasize with her as a mother. I just wanted to slap her one myself.

This one was personal, and as the movie went forward the family figured it out. That is why they fought back, because they realized they weren't just going to hand her back over.

Yep, exactly. They knew it was different and figured out that meant there was more risk involved and they weren't just likely to give the money and get the kid. And they were right because the man was planning to kidnap their daughter.

They did follow along at first before they realised that e.g. the mother didn't shoot the kidnapper when she could have, etc.

"Emphasize" or "empathize"? Not the vocabulary police, but that was lame.

When presented a situation like this, most people would naturally act react defensively. Impulses run rampant in times like these.
