I read the book after enjoying all but the last fifteen minutes or so of the film. The book I read was published with the title "Trapped" and used cover art from the film.
I found the book added little to the film and to a certain extent I found Greg Ilse' writing style annoying, often drifting into irrelevant and unecessary little details that disrupted the flow.
Of the two I much prefer the film, largely because of some very good performances and moments of great tension. These are the reasons a can watch it time and again.
However, the film could have been so much better had there been greater attention to detail and continuity, fewer technical errors and less sheer stupidity. For example, cutting an aircraft's engine out of necessity, then diving as steeply as possible at the ground, when the need is to stay in the air for as long as possible! Didn't the qualified pilot for the filmed sequences point out to the director that a gentle gliding decent would be sufficient to keep the plane from stalling? It was so unnecessary, and in an instant the tension generated before that moment was lost to laughter.
