Jenny, Susan + JP diasappearing in series 3?

Anyone know why?! they were my favourite characters!

reply

There was never any explanation, I always thought that with Susan and Jenny both playing acting heads of departments they moved to better jobs. But Jp, I dont understand why he was only in one series because I really liked the character.

I'd explain it by saying teaching has a high attrition rate. Teachers come and go. Sad as it was for those characters to disappear, it adds a (further) touch of realism to the show.

I'd agree. Teachers come and go in schools. They give in their resignation they leave. The next term or year comes along and you can do nothing but get on with it. Occasionally they refer to the others as I'm sure teachers would do, but you deal with what is there. I remember my favourite teachers at school, when they used to leave. I'd miss them, but the next year you just get on with it. It's only when you hear news like 'so and so is having a baby' or they come back to visit that you go 'oh yeah, I've missed'. The way of school life I suppose. It's the same when pupils leave.

As realistic as it was to have them leave it left such a huge void in the show. Don't get me wrong, Season 3 was very funny, but very different from the first two seasons. Without Susan and Jenny, who were both rational, the show wasn't as grounded anymore.
It would have been nice if they'd kept at least one of them on, so that the show's original mood flowed from season to season (I know Raquel Cassidy left because she didn't want to get typecast but I don't know what happened to Nina Sosanya).

It was a shame they left i miss Simon too i never expected it, it was kind of sudden considering he was the main character.

Its strange, but having just got the complete box set as a christmas gift and watching the first two series over again, i'm absolutely positive that when originally screened on channel four there was an episode at the very end of series two that had Susan chasing after Simon. It might just have been a spark of wishful thinking, but i'm positive there was. If there wasn't, there really should have been! :)

I remember a few people saying that there was a missing episode at the end of season 3, but I've never heard anything about season 2. Chasing after as in looking for, or chasing after as in lusting after? (Or both?)

I wish there'd been an episode like that too - I was always gunning for those two to get together!

reply

Chasing after how? There was one where she spent half the episode thinking he was dead after seeing a mangled bike on the way to school.

The woman who played Susan is now playing yet another 'Susan-ish' character in 'Moving Wallpaper' (Friday nights, ITV 1 / UK Channel). She looks good though and she's still good at what she does. Think she pairs well with Ben Miller, they bounce well off each other, especially in sarcastic mode.

Have to say I am currently re-watching all of teachers on Channel 4 OD and it's really good, very much enjoying it but like a lot of people, I do wish that they hadn't lost Susan and Jenny and JP in one fell swoop and then provided no real back story to it or explanation and the loss of Kurt and Brian was just pants, there didn't seem to be a transistion, it almost felt like a completely different series.

I could be wrong, but I think it's the only programme of it's type to have been commissioned that many times by the channel, I do remember something along those lines being commented at the time.

I still love this series though!!

Did anyone notice that in series 3 Matt's car registration plate read "J 840 PEA".... just a sad thing I picked up... referring to JP..... Lame I know

Session 4 so far is weird, I bought session 1-3 a couple of months ago and couldnt wait to start watching session 4. Now everyones gone! I can't believe Kurt & Brian & Matt are dead! Im proper gutted!

reply

There wasn't as Simon left before the end of the season - episode 9 of 11

reply

Could've been any number of reasons I suppose. The showrunners didn't want to continue with/see any future for/like the character? The actor left because he'd had enough of the programme/had other projects he wanted to do?
