Sidda's Boyfriend, Connor, 's accent

It's been bugging me and I can't seem to figure out what kinda accent he has! Irish!? It's so unconsistent throughout the movie.

It's the Darby O'Gill accent.

reply

I think he's making a pitiful attempt at an Irish accent but ends up more like how a leprechaun might speak

reply

Yup it's supposed to be irish but it it possibly the worst attempt at an irish accent i have ever heard (excluding the entire cast of far and away). surely in all of hollywood there is an irish person who ould have played the part.

reply

The producer Callie Khouri was originally looking for someone with an American accent, but she really liked Angus for the part because he was a good and stable man to play Sidda's counter. However he wasn't that good at the American accent so, he said since the characters name was Irish why not he do an Irish accent. I thought it was fine. I've met plenty of Irish people with differing accents, it's all about where you come from.

reply

I think he did a great job at the accent. Irish in Australia don't sound any different to what Connor sounded like.

reply

Im Irish and no one speaks like that in Ireland- anywhere

reply

They could always have asked Fionnual Flanagan to advise him on his accent. But very few people actually tried to do anything right in this movie. And did anyone find the whole casting odd. I can buy Ashley Judd as a young mother in her early 30's, but not as a late teen early 20 yr old. No actress is able to make us suspend disbelief that well.

reply

Angus is Scottish, and that is exactly what it sounds like, believe me, I know a few Scotts. You probably know this already but he played Robert the Bruce in Braveheart. The "Judas" who would be king. Great job on that character!

wow....if he's trying to do a scottish accent, it's horrible. and believe me, because i AM scottish.

reply

I think they should have just let him use his own accent - there are some actors that can do foreign accents really well, and if you're not one of them, you should just be allowed to use what you have....

reply

I love how you say that, considering he IS Scottish.

reply

Angus IS Scottish...the accent that he uses IS his own...that is how SOME Scotts sound...it is not how ALL Scotts sound...its the same accent he has had in each film he has been in. Its so far away from Irish of course it doesn't sound like it...its his own Scottish accent. And really to be quite honest its very difficult to say what is a 'correct' accent of any sort, it depends on upbringing geographically, the era and your interpersonal relations. Linguistics.
Wow... If everyone wants to get all uppity about accents try looking at the other actors in the movie who try to put on a Southern accent...like Maggie Smith (who is English.) Good attempt (actually great job considering she is English!)but really the only one who comes off sounding French Creole is Ashley Judd (who was the only one with a Southern upbringing.)

reply

actually, Brits do a better Southern accent than most yankees. and come on people, you have only to click on Angus's link to see that he is, in fact, Scottish. the difference between Scottish and Irish accents is as huge as the difference between Irish and Brittish or American accents. just because he doesn't sound like Sean Connery (who doesn't sound like most Scotts) doesn't mean he's faking his own dialect

I had to laugh at this. I've seen so many films where Brits play southern characters and they slip so many times with their accents. Example: Judas Kiss. God bless Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson. Phenomenal actors, but their attempts at a Louisiana accent was bad.

I believe in Steve Austin and his plan to put a casino on the moon

reply

I honestly don't tyhink they could have chosen a better actor to play Connor, Angus did a great job as a loving boyfriend/ husband. (I'm thinking b/f) My only problem with him in that movie is pay attention at the end, the man CANNOT DANCE TO SAVE HIS LIFE!!!! but that's ok I love him anyway and i'd give anything to be in Sandra Bullock's shoes while filming that movie. He's gorgeous

reply

Why do people think every country has a cookie cutter accent. I live just outside Chicago, and there is a difference in accents between the north side and south side of Chicago and it's just a city.

If anything, he has a heavy accent and is trying to make it easier on the American ear. That is probably why it sounds inconsistant.

reply

Angus is Scottish, but for some reason he was asked to do an Irish accent, which he didn't manage very well.

reply

hmmm... I thought the accent sounded a bit strange... I do agree though the irish thing wasn't working very well for him, he kind of sounded like the leprechaun from the Lucky Charms comercials. But it was still cute at least he made an attempt

Why must close-minded people always open their mouths?

reply

I don't understand any of you people. Especially the one that said he did a bad Scottish accent. How the hell can a man from Scotland that speaks with a Scottish accent have a bad Scottish accent?

You have any idea how completely ridiculous you sound when you say that? If he is using his natural accent when he speaks, how can it be a bad accent?

Now the people that said he was Scottish trying to do an Irish one? Is there really that strong of a difference? I am not being mean or ignorant here. I am honestly asking.

I do agree that if they made the character Irish instead of Scottish that probably was really stupid but still. I thought the accent was fine but I am from America so I will admit in some sense I don't know.

And as far as far and away goes, the only one that was off was Tom Cruise. Somebody said he was using a soft spoken Irish accent. I don't know if there is a such thing as a soft spoken Irishman. Nicole Kidman and the rest of the cast was fine, probably because they are foreign actors. Hehe. Well I don't know bout all of them but quite a few were.

I found it funny when there was someone on these boards that wanted to boycott Batman Begins when it came out because it didn't have an American playing Batman. I said, get an American that can act, and American will do it. Hahaha.

Yes I know there are Americans that can act? But I just thought the boycotting idea was ridiculous.

reply

Americans cannot do the Irish accent full stop.

His accent was appalling no one in Ireland speaks like that (Im Irish) And as for Far and Away- all the accents in that were terrible as well!
