Need your help - Question (Spoilers)

Towards the end, the main character was telling his friend that he didn't trust him and the friend was asking for the knife. I got distracted for a bit after that. The next scene I saw was the sheriff chasing the main character. Can someone tell me what happened to the friend?

Oh, and it appeared that the main character was hit by the truck, but the way the sheriff was acting (repeating himself) when he was telling the waitress what happened made me think that he killed the guy instead. Anyone else? Thanks in advance.

The lead actor did have an accident and killed a girl (accidentally).

His mother (and lawyer friend) saved him from trial.
He was drunk and would have been in jail.

Now he had to live with the secret and lied about it.
The story however is that when you lie long enough, you start to believe your own lies.
But the thruth will come up somehow, someday.

So the lead actor's consience made up the girl and her family, to chase and kill him for his crime.

The villagers however, noticed that he was acting weird.
Cause he was alone, talking to an imaginary girlfriend.

So the sheriff went after him.
The lead actor himself called his friend and his friend found him.
He killed his friend because he was getting paranoia.

The sherrif discovered this, tried to catch him, and the lead actor got hit by a truck.
Some kind of justice because that was his crime too.

The sheriff later told the story to others.
The sheriff did not kill him. He just tried to catch him.

Thank you for explaining that. I was able to catch the ending after posting this thread and it made more sense.
