It could have been 'better'...

The main idea is not that bad, but the movie $u..s big time!It comes from Sullivan's character that is a real a$$..le and doesn't act like a remorseful or changed man, but he's still the boy who killed that girl because he was so drunk and couldn't take responsibility for his actions. In one way he deserves what happens to him because his first accident didn't teach him any lesson... at all. He's a spoiled brat (calling his mom and counting on his uncle...) and he thinks that his "preservation" is the only thing worth something.
He shows no respect for anybody and that doesn't make him likable at all. He's still drinking and driving and even if the Franklins are angry rednecks (no offense in that)their attitude is quite understandable seeing that Matt Sullivan got away with the "accident" and the killing of their daughter Molly. The movie could have been ok but it was indeed terrible. The lesson is "karma" in some way...
Matt doesn't even trust his best friend that drove all the way to help him, he's selfish and irresponsible.
