Why Clana is so frustrating and dragged I think

Is that the writers were probably afraid once she knew his secret it would kill the tension but however dragging it out for six seasons cause it to get stale. Think by the time of Smallville the whole girlfriend can't know the hero's identity had become time worn and perhaps too implausible for Lana, Chloe etc to not find out Clark's secret sooner than later.
