Sound editing terrible

I know this is an old series but in some episodes it is sometimes impossible to hear what's going on. The sound editing is such a mess, there is at times the reenactment actors talking, then some random incidental music and also the narrator at the same time. Why do they need this stupid music? Why is it playing louder than the vocals? It's like trying to watch TV with the radio on. I used to watch Forensic Detectives when I lived in the Uk, and it was never like this. I've watched a lot of these New Detectives episodes and it's only been the last few that I have noticed with the idiotic sound mixing. It's such a shame as the program content is very interesting. Maybe I need to mute the sound and put subtitles on?!

I just bought the entire 9 season set & so have been 'blitz watching' the episodes.
I know what you mean about the bad balance of sound & dialogue on some episodes.
I'm wondering if some of that is because of a bad transfer to DVD rather than being a part of the original series.

I'm glad it wasn't just me! You may be right about transfer issues. I do however watch it on Foxtel (Australian Satellite TV) So I wonder why the issue happens on there?
It just seems over kill on sounds, when all they need is the narrator or the reconstruction vocals. Why they have to add incidental sounds into the mix too, I don't know!
