I think HOLLYWOOD ENDING is better than early work like BANANAS and PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, but I don't think it ranks up there with his best work like HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, DESCRONSTRUCTING HARRYING, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, and MANHATTAN. It's somewhere in between.
sharei'd say Hollywood ending is his Worst film ever, but a mediocre film compared the usual trite being released in theaters.

Definitely his worst ever. It never even got released in the UK, which is normally fairly sympathetic to Woody. Can't agree that it's best seen by non-Woodyphiles though - what would they see in it? It would only confirm for them why they don't like him.
shareThe reason i said best seen by non woodyphiles was not suggesting people who hate woody Allen films to go see it. I just think if you don't have the expectations of something like Annie Hall or Crimes and Misdemeanors, because you've never really seen a woody Allen film, you might just find it fun and not as disappointing.

I didn't think this was as funny as the other films I've seen, like Manhattan Murder Mystery, Sleeper, or Annie Hall. The only funny parts were the scenes with Allen in them, and there were only a few lines of his that were very funny. The others were like, "meh", yeah I get the joke, but it wasn't worth laughing about...

I never saw Bananas but Play it Again Sam is my favorite of Allen's early "Wacky" pictures and I don't think Hollywood Ending comes anywhere close to the genius of Play it Again Same; but then again I prefer to see Allen on screen with Keaton then any other actress on earth, those two were perfect together, but still Play it Again Sam is far superior picture.
