Short Shrift

I just went through a self inflicted Woody Allen film festival courtesy of the New York Public Library. It consisted of Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity, Anything Else, Hollywood Ending, and Scoop. While many expressed howling admiration for Scoop and its understated suppressed Woody Allen humor I can't see why so many gave Hollywood Ending such a short shrift. There were more laugh per minute in the 2002 film than Scoop. True, Scarlett Johanssen is much better than Tea Leoni, but Hollywood ending is hilarious without Allen holding back or being eclipsed.
Does anyone notice how Woody Allen transforms so many of the actors in his film into reflections of himself with all the manners of Woody's neurotic tica and fumblings??? Will Ferrell, Kenneth Branagh, Judy Davis and Scarlett Johanssen all become Woody. Only Jason Biggs is inadequate in his clumsey adaption.

Hollywood Ending got short shrift because it was a very bad movie. When did he marry Tea Leoni? When she was 12? This was a very painful movie to watch. Scoop was as brilliant as this wretched waste of time was not. And it does, indeed, has a "Hollywood ending."
