he called it his best movie

When I saw W.A. interviewed at the 92nd St Y earlier this year he said this was his favorite of his own movies. I was pretty surprised because I never though much of it. Watched it again and I was rolling on the floor. Hilarious stuff.

Some of the reocurring motifs of this film: the May/December romance, the distain for California and the contemporary film industry, lingering former relationships, many more. Beautifully photographed too.

From what I remember of that interview, he named "The Hill" by Sidney Lumet starring Sean Connery as one of his favorite post WW2 movies. I got it off Netflix and it's a beast alright.

It's definately the funier Allen movie I got to see, but the best probably not...
Annie Hall got my heart I think...

WA has a tendency to say a lot of his films are his favorites. I'd say about 80% of the films he's made he's said the same thing at one point. Stardust Memories is the one he says it most often about. Match Point he also consistently says is his favorite. Not surprising since he doesn't watch his films after they are done. So it depends how well they hold up in his mind.

It is a fact that he hates most of his films. He feels that often he failed to put on screen what he had originally envisioned. He does like Hollywood Ending and The Purple Rose of Cairo. He feels Hollywood Ending is one of his better films because what he put on screen is what he had envisioned.
