Hyper Street Fighter 2 AE: Favourite chars and versions?

In Hyper Street Fighter 2, you can play different versions of characters from any of the various different versions of Street Fighter 2 (World Warrior through to Super Turbo). Which chars are your favourite and from which SF2 version?

For me:

Ryu: ST, HF/CE
The super Turbo version of Ryu is the best for me. Love the super fireball, and all the new moves he has in ST (jumping MP, overhead MP, dash HP) are useful.Sometimes I play Hyper Fighting or CE Ryu if I prefer a simpler but more damage playstyle.

Ken: ST, CE
As with Ryu, the latest (Super Turbo) version of Ken is the best for me.
Ken's got a range of new and useful moves in this version: a jump MK which has good reach and great for cross ups, a new standing HK which has reach, a new grapple grab (f/b+mk), an air throw (jump f/b+mk/hk) and a whole bunch of new 'special' kick specials. Best version of Ken to date.
I also play his classic HF and CE versions. The classic 2-hit fierce dragon punch rocks.

Guile: ST, CE-HF, WW
Although super turbo Guile is not the strongest version of Guile, I play him most because of his better standard moves. His regular HK moves him forward which is extremely useful way to move forward (and attack) while charging.
His "new" f+mk is very fast, has good reach and goes over lows easily - it's a useful move to poke and charge at the same time.
However the old versions of guile (WW, CE and HF) are often regarded as the better versions.

Blanka: ST, HF:
ST blanka is clearly the best version of Blanka by far. He can combo attacks more easily and the new moves such as the forward/back+ hop and slide move makes him more sneaky.
I play the HF version on occasion mainly because I prefer his old style vertical rolling attack better than his new version.

E.Honda: ST, HF
I really dislike his new moveset in ST, but his Ohicho Throw is just too good to pass up.
I play his HF version mainly because his old style sumo slam was so much better in the older version (always hits twice: On the way up and down)

Chun Li: ST
chun Li seems to get better with every sequel. The super Turbo one is the best version without doubt.
Occassionally I play her HF version because of the little tricks you can do with her fireball move in that game.

Zangief: ST, HF
banishing fist from ST is way too good to pass up. It's fast, it cancels fireballs, is comboable and most importantly it closes distance very quickly and allows zangief to set up SPDs.
the HF zangief is also good because of his unique Turbo lariat which only appears in one game. Zangief can't be swept low during the turbo lariat and the move is generally good for sneaking in for a throw attempt.

Dhalsim: Super Turbo only.
Super turbo dhalsim is the ONLY good competitive version of dhalsim. Forger other versions.

Balrog: ST, CE
ST Balrog has the technique: combos, moves and an excellent super.
where as CE has less attacks but way more power.

Vega: Super Turbo.
Vega improves with each sequel. The super Turbo version is best, the other versions especially his older versions are just "blah" compared to his new versions.

Sagat: Super, CE
They nerfed Sagat in Super Turbo and I think by far he is the only character in Super Turbo that actually got toned down where as others got a boost.
His original Super and CE versions are his best and strongest versions in the game.
Despite being toned down, I still play the ST Sagat on occasions because I like the colours of his trunks. ^_^ Super Turbo is the only mode where you can choose up to eight different colours for your chars. Other versions only give you two plain generic colours.

M.Bison: ST, CE
Super Turbo and Champion Edition Bison are his two strongest incarnations in this game. The super turbo version has more combos and new tricks
whereas the CE version has less options but a more powerful scissors kick that can be used in combos (you can combo into and out of it), redizzy, and guard trap infinites.

New Challengers: Cammy, Deejay, Feilong, T.Hawk. (Super Turbo)
Since all of them are only selectable in in two SF games (not much choice) I might as well list them all together since they're all best in their ST versions.

An impressive list and you know the game well, although there a few points i disagree with you on though?

Dhalsim is somewhat stronger in his HF and WW versions, if your a very patience player and don't rely on the 'Yoga Teleport' in your game. WW dhalsim has very strong normals compared to his later version which simply have better range and tweaks overall. And Sagat's multiple colours (along with the other cast members) could also be chosen in the "Super" version of SF2 and not just ST by the way!

For me personally:

1) Guile: ST, HF, WW, CE.

Ability to airthrow and combo after throwing a sonic boom was always a get option for Guile. doesn't really need more than two special moves and always possessed an excellent game design overall. Like his CE and HF version the best, but use his ST version because of his super and new tweaked moves!

2) Dee-Jay: ST, Super.

Loved Dee-Jay's upgrades in ST as did everybody back in 94'. Went from average character in Super SF2 to the top-tier (within the top 5 characters) in Super Turbo easily. Good mix-up game, faster fireball/boom, has a jacknive kick akin to Guile's flashkick but it juggles, and has a excellent range on his standing hard kick, sweepkicks etc.

3) Ryu: ST, HF, CE, WW.

Loved Ryu from day one. Strong defensive and offensive game and has no outright weaknesses in the right hands. His ST version comes with deashing punches and strong punch air juggle, and a Super ("Grand Blazing Fireball") that can be used to dangerous effect in close quarters let alone from far range with good timing. Before ST i perfered his HF and CE edition versions though, so in Hyper ST they are other option i'll take.

4) Ken: ST, HF, Super, CE.

Strong in most of his SF2 incarnations. Ken is mostly used better in his ST or HF versions for me. his St version was without a shadow of doubt, given great upgrades with multiple special moves kicks, and an "airthrow", and who would pass up not using his super Dragon-Punch. CPU version of ST Ken can be a 'bastard' though and has you cursing alot in most matches.

5) Chun Li: ST, CE, WW, Super.

Chun Li, very balanced and strong in previous SF2 versions, but is quite a handful in ST. But not quite as 'ripoff/thief' in her Street Fighter 3: Third Strike version however, lol.

6) Zangief: ST, HF, Super, CE.

ST gief was upgraded nicely in the Super series of SF2. but i agreew ith you that HF turbo lariat was the only thing missing from his later versions. Always love this trailer where HF gief piledrives Blanka out of his 'Super Combo'!

7) Akuma: ST (controversial but he is used alot in casual play)

Overpowered and banned from tournaments. But is quite fun to use in causals though. Akuma's first appearence is here is quite a treat seeing as Capcom added a secret character to the SF2 series before it was finished. A more powerful and dangerous version of Ryu/Ken with juggles and higher priority on the regular 'Shoto' moves along with an 'airfire ball' for his troubles!

8) Balrog (Boxer): ST, HF, CE.

Top-tier character and upgraded very well in ST.

9) M.Bison (Dictator): ST, HF, CE, Super.

Loved M.Bison when in Champioship Edition SF2 when the bosses were finally available for game playing. Championship Edition Bison and his Psycho Crusher caused too much mayhem back in the day, lol. Besides playing his ST version and his uber-strong CE, i actually perfer his HF the most (ST/HF).

10) Dhalsim: ST, Super, WW.

His ST version is quite refined and powerful in the right patience hands and is one of the strongest characters in the game with accurate mindset following his gameplay stylings.

11) Fei-Long: ST, Super

Fei-Long along with the rest of the new challenegers are best used in their ST modes. And Fei-Long is a juggle-fest tramp by far. but he is dangerous and powerful in the right hands. Offers great gameplay options for those who like fighting games but can't stand the 'Shoto' characters like Ken and Ryu!

12) Cammy: ST, Super.

(See Fei-Long)

13) E.Honda: ST, HF, CE, Super, WW.

(Agreed with your post above)

14) T.Hawk: Super, ST.

T-Hawk is the only exception to the 4 New Challengers rule, and is actually quite stronger/faster in his original Super version if played properly and rather aggressively. Although his game requires dedication like Dhalsim, to make him work properly though.

Gets way too much bad rep from people who can't use him properly!

15) Vega (Claw): Super Turbo.

Agreed with your earlier comments above!

16) Sagat: ST, Super, CE, HF.

Uber strong and powerful in most version playable (except WW). Sagat i use to use back in CE. but he has usually been associated with being an overpowered 'bastard' (See and play SF4?). But yes between his super and ST version, in the past, i used his HF version, but i'd go for his Super or ST mode incarnation these days.

17) Blanka: ST, CE, Super, HF.

Use to main Blanka somewhat in the past in WW, CE and ST. Was the only truly vulnerable WW character from SF2 and took massive damge from a poorly time and countered 'Cannonball roll'! ST his is best option outside his HF version.

I had ideas on what a Hyper version of Street Fighter 3 should be like. And with recent news of the SF3 Online Edition reckon if they go the whole hog with SF3 this is what an Online/Hyper Edition sohould be like taking a page out of Hyper Super Street Fighter 2!

An impressive list and you know the game well,

Thanks very much. I'm a big fan of the SF games and ST/HSF2 is among my personal fave of the SF series - the other one being SF3TS and sf4 to some extent.

And Sagat's multiple colours (along with the other cast members) could also be chosen in the "Super" version of SF2 and not just ST by the way!

Err no.
Only in the original "super" sf2 game can you choose all different colours.

In the Super Turbo and Hyper SF2 AE, only the "Super Turbo" chars can choose all different colours.
"Super" chars, even though they could select from multiple colours in their original game, gets limited to only 2 colour choices in ST and AE

"super" chars can only choose between two colours which are their normal pre-ST colours and a "faded" colour alternative of their normal colour.
CE chars can choose between CE and normal colours
HF chars can choose between HF and normal colours.
WW chars can choose between normal colour and faded version of normal colour.
