Tom Cruise

I loved the movie - i would have liked however a little bit more illumination of the people that didn't like the guy. What kindof ticks me off is Tom Cruise doing the narration - he gives it a melodramatic swing, as if in defense of Kubrick, he's speaking out for the good vs. evil in the world - showcasing and accusing those who have failed the Jesus of filmmaking during his lifetime. I just can't stand the guy. I was on his side in principle in the whole antipsych-thing, but then I saw the interview. This guy is completely naive and impressionable - he's waiting for approval of other people in anything he says and does and has no moral integrity of his own. ARGH, it just ticks me off.

I agree with you as well. I really didn't much for Tom Cruise doing narration. It should have been one of his children or his admirers.

Tom Cruise has a very irritating, polarizing personality and his cockiness emerged through every role that he played for several years before his image became tarnished by his public outbursts. I was mystified that Kubrick cast him in the first place for Eyes Wide Shut although the choice does make a certain kind of sense.

However, I think there are plenty of other actors that have been associated with Kubrick films that could have done creditable narration--Malcolm MacDowell, for example. I just had the thought of using Douglas Rain (voice of HAL). That would have been an interesting touch.

Tom Cruise is a great choice. The most famous actor Kubrick ever casted.

uhh..jack nicholson?

Jack Nicholson's more famous than Cruise, more talented too, well, in my opionon.

Yawn, stretch. Snore.

Agreed, I want to see this, perhaps I can just watch it muted?

And please, Cruise over Sellers?

reply

George C. Scott was incredibly famous in his day (but not available to do the narration), as was Kirk Douglas. and yeah, Jack Nicholson is at least as famous as Cruise.

The more I see of this guy, he makes me sick!!!!

Yeah, the documentary was awesome, but Cruise doing the narration was wrong. It felt like a pseudo-docu at moments, and that wasn't right.

Now, if the voice of HAL did the narration... Spooky!

Yah, Cruise's nasally drone does the doco no favours, but the subject matter is so compelling, one can pretty easily endure it. Having said that, yes, another person who worked with the Great Man would have been more appropriate - my vote goes to Sydney Pollack, or even Kirk Douglas's son Michael. Still, extremely well made, and the unseen footage was terrific.
