Excellent film, genuinely funny, great caricature of the australian 'bloke' and heart felt premise.

Some plot points a little iffy, but generally a good effort.

Save your money. I wouldn't even rent this movie. I spent money at the cinema to see this movie, and now I wish I didn't. It's not as bad as Thunderstruck, but I would give this movie 6 out of 10.

reply

really?? omg.. is it atleast funny?? cause i have seen my share of really horrible movies.. so i might at least rent it .. but only if its like funny or pretty dramatic.. and is the acting bad in it?

The acting is okay. It's just that the movie overall makes you wish that you hadn't seen it in the first place.

You're an idiot, this was a great film, Australian comedy had started to die until the Nugget was released.

It wasn't a BAD movie, but it certainly wasn't very good either. It was good enough to keep me entertained, though, and I watched the whole thing. Good movie to veg out to.

My two main issues were:
1) They spent a lot of time in the beginning establishing "this is how this character acts," but not by portraying them as acting that way, but literally through a voice-over by the "eccentric" narrator. Now, while this is lazy scriptwriting, it could still be acceptable... except! The characters NEVER act that way AGAIN for the rest of the movie (or perhaps once or twice as a visual gag). After the narrator stops telling us about their unique personal quirks, they magically lose all personality traits and transform into "Generic bloke #1," "Generic bloke #2," and "Generic bloke #3." Thus, it goes from lazy scriptwriting to... just plain bad scriptwriting!

2) A lot of the humor is the sort where the characters are doing something that the audience knows is so incredibly stupid, that you have to wince and it's almost hard to watch. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, but I personally don't enjoy that type of comedy so much. It does seem to be a very common comedic strategy in Aussie films, though, so... meh. I don't want judge peoples' personal tastes.

It took me a while to pick up the accent, even jokes were kinda diff to get on. This was a typical Aussie movie, and made for aussies. Even though i liked it a bit. Nice location, acting was okay, and the script showed the base of friendship in a fictional way. I was fine with it.
Those who didnt like it, maybe coz of the accent probably.
Trust me fellas, i've seen worst movies than ever, this is not to be called "bad" in that terms.

Is the australian accent really that hard for americans to understand? Me being an australian i wouldnt know but every american i have actually spoken too seemed allright with it.

reply

yeah, know what you mean ClownDamage, I myself am English, everyone else who speaks the language seems to understand eachother, sure they might get confused but they still understand, but Im sure Americans seem to have the biggest problem with it, one famous example being Trainspotting where I was told the first 20 minutes were shown in subtitles in the cinemas, lol.
