Earnest/Jack/John is the Algernon's elder brother. Then towards the end when they show the flashback where Miss.Prism is putting him in the handbag and there is another kid in the room who looks in the handbag, who is he? Is he supposed to be Algernon? But the kid was older than the baby (John).

Also when they show flashbacks of the brothers after they find out about their relationship, they show that scene again.

If you look closely, you will see the kid is shown a few minutes earlier, standing at the top of a flight of steps as Prism puts the infant in the pram. He appears to be four or five years old and it seems it is Algernon - Earnest's OLDER brother. While I would have believed Algie to be the younger, Earnest does introduce him to the room as his elder brother when Lady Bracknell finishes what she's being saying.
