I don't get it...i thought cars were invented in the early 20th century, but Gwendolin drives one to see 'Earnest' in the country...have i just got the thing about cars wrong?

The first car was built in Germany in 1885; the setting of "Ernest" was the 1890s so the car is probably not out of place in the film.

There are no cars in the play, Gwendolen comes down by train. Cars were not very common in the 1890s, when this play was written. But naturally that wouldn't bother the makers of this film.
