Why not ask this question? It's a legitimate one. The entire point of many films like this is to inspire the audience to think outside the box. There should be questions, and debate about the meaning.

The entire story line was about identities, and shifting roles, in very intense situations. Nothing was as it appeared to be on the surface... There were hidden agendas at every twist and turn.

helegis: Someone asked a sincere question without demeaning the film.

You had a choice.

You could have answered with your interpretation of the meaning of that scene. You had an opportunity to educate another human being who may not have the experience, education, knowledge or even the critical thinking skills you possess. You could have showed off your erudite film knowledge in a postive way and perhaps help other readers of this string understand that portion of the film. You could have shown some kindness and maturity.

Or you could have kept your opinions to yourself.

Instead, you chose to be snide and demeaning. You chose to be cruel and arrogant. Your reply served no purpose except to make yourself feel superior for an instant.

Perhaps next time you'll make a better choice.

I don't know if anyone is reading this, but just in case I thought I'd offer some insight. The key to understanding this scene is reading John Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi." The scene condenses the beginning of the play's action AND represents the reversal of traditional gender roles that provides the tragic action for the play. Essentially, the Duchess's male relatives try to control her sexuality with disastrous consequences.

Webster's play is nothing short of fantastic. Reading it will open up many dimensions in this equally wonderful film.

Hope that helps!
