Why do people like this show..?

I don't like, but my best mate loves it, I'm not bashing it at all I just wondered what makes this show so popular?

R.I.P. Dani Jarque - a great loss

It's stupid very very stupid. The characters are stupid, the storyline is, nothing about it is really good.

And that's why I like it :P I love watching it when I'm tired and don't want to think or when I'm cranky. Brain activity at zero and just hanging around pretty much what the characters do themselves :D

because we are english and can relate to it lol

I agree

Well, I'm not English and I love it! The characters are endearing and it's just funny. Although it's over the top, I guess anybody can relate to one character or has been in similar situations...
I think I just like a show that doesn't take itself seriously and where we can all have a laugh.

reply

I think a lot of young Brits can relate to it...even though the characters' personalities are over the top, the characters themselves are like archetypes of young British couples.

im english and i think its one of the worst things on tv!

TPOL is rubbish now, but it used to be good. It was never fantastic, in my opinion, but the first four series were entertaining, and the next two were good too, but moving towards the surreal, which didn't work. Then came the awful series seven, and the just as bad series eight, and the Christmas episode of a few days ago. Since series seven, the stories have been rushed, the characters have been sometimes almost unrecognisable, the "jokes" have been often flat, and the show has lost all feeling for the characters. The program was sometimes crude, often unnecessarily, but now it does that very often just for effect. It's rubbish.

I watch every episode once, if I remember, to see if it gets better, which it won't unless they get GOOD writers in again. I have the first six series on DVD, but I wouldn't accept series seven or eight on DVD even if they were free. If the program doesn't get any better then as far as I'm concerned TPOL finished after series six.

If you can, try watching the earlier seasons, they're a lot better than the latest one. It's almost like watching a completely different show at times. It really lost all of it's appeal when Johnny left; even if he were to come back now, it's going to be too late to save it.

reply

Yeah agree with most it was a good show up to series six, never great but pretty good but after Ralf Little left they really should have ended it. It may have been pretty low brow and contained a lot of toilet humour compared to some sitcoms but it made me laugh and that's the most important thing at the end of the day isn't it?

"No kitty! This is my pot pie!"

reply

I agree. I watched them all up to the end of S6 and while the early ones were pretty good in parts it really was starting to flag a bit. I've not seen it for a while and have just watched a couple of episodes of S8. They were fecking dire; utterly awful, and I'm not bothering to watch any more of it.

reply

Because it is not politically correct.
Bloody piss funny show and the girls are god damn hot.

reply

Because it's puerile and childish... And so are the majority of the British public!

"You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else."

reply

Isn't it ironic that the show jumped the shark when Jonny died trying to jump a shark?

reply

I think that was the intention of that whole story. Apparently it was a reference to when The Fonz did it in Happy Days(?), although I have never seen that.

reply

If you want an honest answer, it's pleasant and Natalie and Sheridan look good in _anything_. It's like watching Man About The House...

reply

Pretty much yeah. It's pretty self deprecating as well which helps. There is something about the brits/Irish and humour whereby even not very funny shows can become surprising success stories because of their use of self deprecating humour. Whereas the American shows which try and pull it off often don't get away with it (the likes of Mike and Molly and 2 broke Girls are just unwatchable, big bang gets worse and worse with each passing season).
