As someone already said Petey was a Pit Bull (or "American Staffordshire Terrier"). Back in the time of The Little Rascals this breed had the opposite reputation it had today. It was seen as a breed the wealthy liked to own and very popular dog. It was aslo *THE* dog for children, and nicknamed "the nanny dog". This is probably why it was chosen as the pet for a group of children in the show. It's a shame they have such a bad wrap now, because they really are excellent with children. More kids are bitten by Dalmatians than pit bulls.
