Unusually good Score

I recently found the soundtrack LP at at thrift store (I collect obscure movie scores) and copied it to CD for listening and it is now one of my favorites.

Composer/conductor Dwight Gustafson created an intelligent, sincere and very listenable score which echoes the deep reverence of the subject matter without falling into the cliche of "revival" music.

There are generous musical quotations from old hymn-tunes, but they are integrated into the whole and never intrude. There is a sense of warm, nostalgic Americana throughout, much like a Max Steiner score for any of John Ford's western pictures.

On the whole SHEFFEY is a surprisingly listenable score; this CD has more than earned its keep and comes highly recommended.
