Why the Irish accents?

All Kelly offspring were born in Australia, it seems to me very unlikely that they all spoke with Irish accents. I will read a biography and try to find the facts. See, watching the film has inspired me, not to rob banks, but to read a book!

Bear in mind that Ned lived in a very insular, segregated Irish community (note all the references to himself and his community as "Irish", not "Australian" in his own writing) and that there was no radio or TV which tends to dilute accents nowadays. He is much more likely to have shared the Irish accent of his parents than any of the accents of the non-Irish community with whom he had little contact.

Ned lived near Glenrowan which today is a couple of hours drive from Melbourne.
In the 1870's getting from Glenrowan to Melbourne would be like flying from Melbourne to Los Angeles today.
Melbourne's population was booming and the city was a huge melting pot of people from all over the world in search of gold at the time this movie is set. However, in the country towns people would have lived in small communities without much outside interference. If you were born to foreign settlers (or ex convicts) you would retain the accent of your parents, family & friends.

These thick accents were probably genuine for the period but I agree they made watching the movie rather painful for my modern Australian ear.

It's "Colonized!"
Seeing these misspells is crazy.
But most people, cut off from the the majority of their society, will develop the accents they are most exposed to.
It's why the early Americans had various British accents.

In Australia (where the film is set and filmed) it's "colonised". Not everywhere uses the same spelling. For example; it's "colour" here instead of "color".

Oh my God. There's nothing that grates on my nerves more than an American 'correcting' correct spelling. 

Edited because I just noticed you're a fan of British film. Oh, the irony!

The.Irish accents are explained in the film, were you paying attention. If you put down the electronic device next time you watch something you won't be missing any important plot points.

British and American spelling are different. You should have learned that in primary school. The IMDB attracts posters from all over the world. If we.all mind our manners, it will remain a nice place here.

Bored now.
