Why do so many people hate this game?

Nearly every review I've read is negative, and I just wonder; why?
Did people expect something that the game didn't deliver(playing as Neo, PC multiplayer, etc.)? Is it because of the, admittedly, not perfect graphics? Did people expect more control over the Kung Fu? I'm starting this thread to find out what it is that makes some people dislike/hate this game, and to talk(well, write) with others about what's good about this game and what isn't. I hope to see many replies. I will not flame anyone for stating their reasons for disliking the game, provided that they are presented in an intelligent, constructive manner.

it's because the games quite buggy and the driving modes seem really tacked on. the game itself, with all the added scenes and interweaving with the movie is cool.

I hated it at first site. It looked terribly boring looking over people's shoulders in HMV. I bought it when it got cheap and was initially apalled by the bad level design and frequent lock ups and general lack of polish. Then I started getting into it from the Merovingian level onwards, reckoning the sound was amongst the best I have heard on any game and admiring the richness of the scenery. I suffered the driving sections and looked forards to playing, then it ended just dead after an appalling hover flight section.

Bags of potential ruined by being rushed out to meet the film deadline.

Looking forwards the the next one when Shiny, who I respect enormously will have more time to complete the thing.

Oh yeah, they both look stupid when they run. Decidedly uncool.

I have to agree on that. The rest of your post makes perfect sense too, and I agree with many of your arguments. Thanks for the reply.

I haven't played all the way through, but what I played I thought it was okay. The game is a bit buggy, and what really annoyed me was that Shiny never took the time to release patches for the game. If you (Shiny) actually cared about your game, you'd take the time to fix most, if not everything, that went wrong with its programming.

Wait a minute...are you saying Shiny developed ETM? If so, you're absolutely mistaken. Atari is responsible for ETM. Shiny is the company making the upcoming Matrix Online. There's no way you could have played that because it hasn't even been released yet.

The game doesn't run all that well on any system I've seen it played on, that's always a big downside. Almost half the levels on Niobe's missions crash with an "Out of Range" error. I thought the kung-fu was good, though the gun play was kinda bland. The driving mini-games sucked back for both players- Niobe's has a horrible perspective and doesn't handle all that well, and Ghost's is boring, not to mention that Niobe doesn't drive worth a damn. The reactor missions were boring and too linear, thus also making it way too long. The directing in the FMVs were really bad. There was no purpose whatsoever for the escape from the Agent Smiths missions, aside from the fact that Agent Smith is cool (Very cool, actually). In fact, the game didn't have enough Agents in general. Agents are too awesome to use conservatively. There was only one awesome confrontation between Niobe and Agent Johnson, in fact, there were only four boss battles (Three if you played as Ghost). Uhm, I think that's about all the faults I found with the game.

We've met before, haven't we?

you shouldn't be putting us on an inquisition. there are no redeeming value in this game. everything has been done before, kung fu, bullet time, driving, shooting, just better. the story isn't good enough to make up for all the frankly awful parts of this game. the game has ZERO replayability.

we all know why the game sucks. you named off half the reasons yourself. you can't look past the graphics. but that isn't why the game sucked either. it has many other reasons to suck.

crashing
graphics
animations/motion capture
controls
sound
driving sequences
sentinel sequences
recycled 'reloaded' scenes.

it was one big commercial for the matrix revolutions. matrix is a cash cow and enter the matrix is an udder.

why the hell would you actually like this forgettable uninspiring copycat of a game?

oh shiny had nothing at all to do with enter the matrix..

erhm i guess thats why there iS A SHINY LOGO AT THE BEGINNING OF THE GAME

I also love this game and the graphics aren't really that bad it's at my top 10 favorite games list I just don't see why fans of the matrix doesn't like this game.

reply

the only problem i had with the game was that there is only one move for any situation. if you disarm a cop who is on your right, you disarm him one way. they should have made 3 or 4 moves for every situation. but even as it is, i like being able to almost choreograph each fight.

reply

Yeah disarming was a bit to easy...they should have done it as a reaction thing so when your character grunts like in MGS3.

But this was just unfortunate, it cood have been A HELLUVA LOT betta!! Just that they gave the rights to a *beep* production company who ruined it a bit.

reply

the 2 main flaws are:

obviously rushed game design

no neo

those problems will not exist with the new game, "path of neo"

reply

Why will the rushed game design not be the case with the new game? I suppose becuase they don't have to bring it out for the Reloaded's release. But it's still made by Shiny, I don't trust them.

I don't think being neo would have been an advantage, much more clever and better having a parralell stroy line.

i just bought this game at a used game store for 6$ and i've loved playing it! i got it for Xbox and i haven't run into any glitches, bugs, or crashes.

the driving levels are a little annoying, but much more tollerable and almost fun if you just switch to a different view (hit the black button and you get a third-person view of it all).

the lighting effects are great.

i love being able to look around corners.

great use of bullet-time.

i don't know what people are complaining about, really. i like the fact that Neo isn't in it. it's not your typical "movie game." it expounds on the story and bridges gaps instead of retreading the same storyline and adding extra missions (like the Spider-Man games or, really, any other movie game adaptation).

i look forward to playing it again as Ghost!

reply

'Cos it's *beep*

reply

This game rocks. On PC there are virtually no glitches, and yes the driving levels are tacked on but there's only one of them on the Ghost campaign (my fave of the two).

Say "toy boat" ten times fast.

reply

You're right about the Ghost campaign being better, the Airport level is sooo cool!

"Hey Earl. I wanna catch that pretty red dot on your back..."

reply

It feels very unfinished. The driving/flying missions are so poorly done they are a hindrance to the gameplay. The rest of the game is fun, but could have been done alot better

Just for the record (for some of the previous posters).
Shiny did develop ETM. Atari were only the publisher...not the developer.

I thought it was a cool game, the graphics were okay. I've played it since it came out and I haven't run into any glitches. I loved the scene where Niobe & Persephone meet, probably one of THE best scenes in the game, just because Monica Bellucci looks and is so hot in that scene among many other reasons too. :-) But I do think the REAL reason people are upset with this game is that you can't play Neo. The most popular character of all the movies is Neo. I think people just were expecting to play as him. Also some of the Ghost levels are hard as sh!t.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.

reply

Very buggy, bad controls, some horrible level design, repetitive gameplay, awful driving and shooting sections, rubbish gunplay and overall a game that clearly was rushed out unfinished.

There were some great moments in it though definitely like the end chase from the agents, reaching the same settings as in Reloaded and the Monica Bellucci cutscene with Niobe, plus if you got the game the day it was released (along with Reloaded) you got a first look at Revolutions before anyone else (once you completed it, but then it wasn't that difficult). I remember being up at 4am playing the hacking game which was ridiculously addictive.

The game overall though was a massively wasted opportunity and it did hurt Reloaded as well. I would take sacrificing Enter The Matrix if it meant the characters and elements in the game were put in Reloaded instead of needing to play the game just to get Niobe, Ghost and Sparks's perspective.

"And what am I supposed to do while you're on a yellow brick quest for a brain?"

reply

How in the world does it hurt Reloaded? It doesn't. Niobe and Ghost are side characters, and this was the perfect way to tell their story. Yes the game had some problems with the gameplay, but the story and cutscenes were the best part.

reply

I am a Max Payne fan, that killed it for me. The bugs, the graphic.
I thought even the Kong Fu mod for Max payne was way beter. And Max Payne 1 looked far better than this.
I only played through this game to get the story with the cut scenes, I was a huge Matrix fan back then.

I, too, find that there are some really great things to the game. It allowed Matrix fans to do what we wanted to, after watching the movies... wall-run, effectively use martial arts to take out a dozen armed opponents, flee(and at times, even fight, and beat!) Agents, hack, drive in the freeway sequence, steer one of the ships... the world feels like The Matrix, with Agents hopping into people near you, being chased by cops and Agents right until you reach an Exit, etc.
