Yeah, everyone should see this movie! It works on several levels. There is obviously the sacrifice for loved ones, but there is also the part about using your mind to get through tough times. By creating this game for his son, he also makes it possible for himself to get through this... To see the world the way you want it to be, and live life that way. This message is especially relevant when many are living in fear of terrorism. Yes, tragedies happen, but there are still beautiful things in life if you look and those are the reasons we live anyway.
The other part that struck me was how the general was so obsessed with his riddles that he could't sleep. Beyond being sad and ironic that he wasn't loosing sleep because of what he was doing to people. I think it also shows the opposite situation, where the situation he was helping create was so awful that his mind was forced to focus on his riddles. His mind could not deal with the real issue that he was killing innocent people. His mind was being controlled in a sense, by what was around him instead of his mind creating the world in which he chooses to live.

I think you hit on the important contrast. The doctor was the foil to Guido. While Guido was in a hell and made it better, the doctor had all the comforts in life but lived in a hell of his own making. Amazing scene by the spilled booze, when the doctor pleaded with the man in the death camp for help. Stunning contrast. Shows how we can have it made and ruin it with our own selfish, petty obsessions.
