Boy meets girl

Bill and Anne obviously had a real connection between them. Initially, she had the upper hand but he was persistent in breaking down her defenses. As they developed personal rapport and trust, she obviously was taken by his spirited individualistic personality. Finally, when his death became inevitible, she yielded to him, just as he yielded to her.

Anne was terribly repressed in her life and controlled by her duty to the institution and her sister's expectations. The irony was that she participated in the destruction of a spirited man who in another situation could have rescued her from all that. The further irony was that the killing of Bill happened exactly as her sister was dying anyway.

I thought that when she left the institution to walk to the lifeless beach in the harsh light of day - that was a perfect metaphor for the emptiness of her life left with only a poignant vision of what might have been.
